I have to agree with "5". I'm sure rail cars count!

And I was thinking of trying for the Bird from the Cabot Strait this morning on the ferry; that would have been a feat to accomplish, don't you think?? ;-)

A Northern Light report. We managed to see some greens and reds to the north, but they were too dim to get any photos plus the ferry has been in and out of rain clouds most of the way. We are just now coming into North Sydney, Nova Scotia to dock, so we have to get ready to drive the car off.

Our next "ports of call": Thetford Mines, QC, and then we're making our way to Houghton for a few days. If you happen to see a silver Pontiac with Texas plates and a geologist sticker in the back window cruising around the Keweenaw next week, you'll know it's us.....

Safe voyage, Capt. and Dr. Nat...sounds like a blast (geological term). At least you don't have to worry about being detained for being an illegal alien :)

I noticed that Jeffers High School is in the spotlight today. I recognize the old photo of the woman as the same woman in my grandmother Hilma (Tikkanen) Koivo's graduation composite photo. Not sure if I remember what year she graduated from Jeffers High School, but I think it was 1918. How cool. I knew that face right away.

BREAKING NEWS: The Portage Lake Lift Bridge is stuck in the upright position, not all the way, but up enough that the bridge is not useable at this time. A civil emergency has been issued, since there's no way for Houghton people to get to the Hospital on the Hancock side, should there be any emergencies.
The authorities do not know how long it will take to fix the bridge at this point.
I just got off the phone with Daryl Laitila who is the keeper of the Bridge Cam, which is also stuck, so not recording photos right now, but she's going to try to get a photo and post it here for us.
I'll try to keep you posted...if you're stuck on either side of the bridge, just try to find a good place to relax until it's fixed. :-)
