Taana Kalliainen and a group of her friends get together for horseback rides that take them on the Keweenaw roads less traveled. This ride took them out to Rockhouse Point, which is in Stanton Township. I don't know any of the particulars of the ride, like where they started from or how long it took them to get there, but I do know that once they arrived on Lake Superior's shores, they felt it was well worth the ride there. Taana said the water was warm and as you can see, the horses enjoyed a dip, too, helping them to cool down, before they headed back home again. If you're not exactly sure where Rockhouse Point is, click on the following link: Satellite View. You can zoom in or out to get a better idea of the location.

JT...I'll bet these photos have you dreaming. Ever think about taking yours UP to the Keweenaw?

Alex...actually right here where I live there are many really nice desinated horse back riding areas. It's a pretty popular activity. Good times!

P.S....the horses would require more luggage than I do! lol!

We will most definitely be doing this ride again!! A couple of us went the day before to find out exactly where to go, it was pretty tricky to find. The ride in was about four miles and it took about an hour and it was a really nice ride! Afterwords I heard that there was an actual rock house on the point in the second photo. We're getting ready for our long ride across the Lower Peninsula that starts two weeks from today. Hopefully we'll have good weather!

Thanks Mary! :)

OOOOH, great pictures!! This is on my Bucket List, to ride a horse on the Keweenaw Beaches!! I hope it happens one day!! Use to ride from a stable that was across from the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge many many years ago.

By Donna (Donna) on Thursday, August 26, 2010 - 10:15 am:

Obviously there's no rocky bottom in that area! AWESOME!!! How wonderful to ride your horse in the lake~! WOW!!!

Do you go out far enough for the horse to "swim?"

By Uncle Chuck (Unclechuck) on Thursday, August 26, 2010 - 11:03 am:

Sister Norma, I'd like to see you try and get up on a horse! lol

By Bob Williams (Wabbit) on Thursday, August 26, 2010 - 11:07 am:

I am not familiar with the stable that used to be across from the Mountain Lodge. Does anyone have any more information about that?

By Donald Kilpela (Commodore) on Thursday, August 26, 2010 - 11:20 am:

The stable was short-lived. It was located in the empty field across from the entry to the Mountain Lodge. We stabled our horse there for one summer and she was almost eaten alive by the flies.

By Taana Kalliainen (Taanarae) on Thursday, August 26, 2010 - 11:59 am:

Donna--One of my friends actually did go out deep enough for her horse to swim. I didn't untack and go out deeper, but I've gone swimming with my horse before and it's a blast!

The water was unbelievably warm and the waves were huge!

By Norma in Midland (Normainmidland) on Thursday, August 26, 2010 - 02:01 pm:

Donald (Commodore) the stable was short lived, maybe 5 years tops. The flies were bad, but the horsebacking riding was awesome up behind the mountain lodge back in the woods.

I haven't gone horseback riding in years. I should get back to doing it, again.

Here's a link from our local paper about a man who walked over 400 miles from Munising to bring "sisu" to the Lions. I think they could use it.

The Lions are going to need a lot more than sisu to be good, especially if they play the Packers the way they are playing tonight......

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Friday, August 27, 2010 - 05:56 am:

The Lions have to grab their sisus' and go for it.

Oh wow...that's got to be an awesome time! Swimming with your horse....Thanks Taana!
