Nice photos, but what a heartbreaking tragedy (Ruth Ann Miller).

The northern lights are awesome. I hope to see them myself

I, too, remember that tragic day. Ruth Annís step brother and step sister went to St. Paulís Lutheran Church in Laurium; they were very active in the youth group (Walther League) at the church. It is though that group that I met the family. I remember all the Lutheran youth groups in the UP were praying for the family and the people who were trying to rescued her. If I recall right she was out berry picking with her brother that day-like all kids do in the Copper Country. It was one of my sons favorite past time when we lived there. I, also, recall that the whole community rallied around the attempt to try to recover her from that shaft in whatever they could do to assist. I hope that the local historians will record in their local history the story of her life along with the story of her death; sometimes we focus only on the ending and not the entire life of the individual when writing our history.

Another tragedy is the final resting place of Ruth and her mother. We were out there not to long ago, less than 2 months, and inside the fence of her final resting place is all kinds of stuff. Stuff like cinder blocks and a plastic container with a cinder block on it as if it is holding something, but, the one thing I found most disturbing is a poster, if you will, telling the story of Ruth, with bullet holes in it standing up where everybody can see it. It is inside the fence, in the back-side of the enclosure, you can see it when you look at Ruths' headstone. There was all kinds of 'junk' inside the fence.

Typical malishious acts of kids with nothing better to do. Very common for some of today's kids everywhere. Tomorrow's leaders???

By Yooperguide (Huntandfish) on Friday, July 16, 2010 - 04:44 pm:

Not just kids Janie---there are adults doing the crime and not doing the time. Don't blame it all on the kids.

Thanks for the Memory Lane, again, and my condolences to the Miller family.
