High up on Quincy Hill, the lights were on this past weekend. On the Quincy Shafthouse, that is and the Pasty Cam received a number of wonderful shots showing different perspectives. The top photo was taken by Chuck Pomazal. The next two shots come from Melanie Hakala Rossi. I'm not sure if that's the silhouette of another photographer that she captured or if someone snapped a shot of Melanie herself as she was taking her pictures. Then her next photo shows the shafthouse once the sky was completely darkened around it. The shot from the Houghton side of the Lift Bridge, with the Quincy Shafthouse illuminated is another contribution from Chuck Pomazal. Finally, Roland Burgan used a bit of software magic and combined two photos together, to create his scene, complete with an added bonus of the moon glowing brightly right alongside the shafthouse.

Lighting this historic mining building up at night like this, was an experiment so that the Quincy Board could see what it would look like lit up first, before they decide to light it from the exterior or the inside. If you like the way it looks... call this number: 906-482-5569 and tell them what you think! Tell them you saw it on the Pasty Cam.

Never saw it lit up from the inside out. That is why we went back the second night because it was suppose to be lit up from the inside and it was not.
It looked great lit up. Took quitw a few pictures.

Now I'm seriously homesick!!

By Bob Williams (Wabbit) on Thursday, July 29, 2010 - 11:09 am:

I remember when it was lit up when Quincy Mining Co. still owned it under the supervision of Louis Koeppel. I think it was under the Tech/Ventures ownership that the lights went off. Can anyone verify that?

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Thursday, July 29, 2010 - 12:56 pm:

The Shafthouse reminds me of the grain elevators scattered across the Dakotas. Since you can see at great distances out there, the elevators looked like skyscrapers on the prairie! If my 'vote' counts, I say the lights should stay on. :)

By allen philley (Allen) on Thursday, July 29, 2010 - 05:13 pm:

I like the first picture best. I like it because the light was not so overly bright white as it is in the later/darker pictures. Lighting from the inside to look historical accurate would be bland and fake. Inside light are about life and activity. Softer less bright white lights spotlight the enduring spirit of #2. In the first picture where the light leaves the windows dark instead of flooding everything white it emphathizes the truth. The Quincy #2 is void of life and activity. It is full of the memories and pride of "Old Reliable" and the people that were there. I would like it lit softly.

Looks great with the lights on.

By Marylyn Hoffman (Marylyn) on Thursday, July 29, 2010 - 10:38 pm:

Turn ON the lights!!!

By ILMHitCC (Ilmhitcc) on Friday, July 30, 2010 - 02:00 pm:

I've got mixed feelings about the lights. It's cool to see the place lit up, maybe not so bright like Allen's suggestion. But - there is so much "light noise" everywhere that it's more and more rare to be able to see the night sky. People come from all around to find a place to stargaze in the Keweenaw. There's really no better night light than starlight. It'd be a shame to lose that in Hancock.
