Sugar Island is located at the eastern tip of the U.P., on the St. Mary's River and is dotted with cottages and several resorts. The only way over is by the Sugar Island ferry and Robert Halonen, along with Lynn Virtanen, bring us photos of the river and the ferry boat today. Robert's shot is taken from Rotary Park, which looks to be quite near the ferry docks and has a pretty good view of the comings and goings on the river there. Lynn's photo of the ferry in the midst of a crossing, was taken from right on the river, while in her kayak. Look closely and you can see the cars that are loaded up and being transported over, on board. Kind of slows down the pace of life when you have to load your car on a ferry to get to your final destination. The ferry only goes so fast and there's no passing lane!

I always like 2 set foot on islands.

Rotary Park is a on little island adjacent to the ferry dock and Clyde's Drive-In. We'd often pick up lunch at Clyde's and go to the park, sit at a picnic table and watch the freighters and the ferry go by. Here's a Google Map link if you're curious:

Sugar Island is a very nice place to visit. It is home to less than 1,000 residents. My parents best friends lived there and farmed for many years. When you live on an island everything is planned according to the ferry schedule.

Here is a very interesting fact for those history buffs. The following website states more facts about this very unusual nomination.

In 1945 Sugar Island was nominated a possible location for the headquarters of the United Nations.

The Boatnerd annual picnic is held at Rotary Park every June in consort with Engineering Day at the Soo. This is the only day that people are allowed to walk out freely among the locks.

Nice pix! I've always liked to watch ferries crossing waters but my fear of water has kept me from them. The only ferry I've ever taken was one of the Staten Island Ferries in New York...they're so big there's not much fear there. However, they have their bad episodes too...like running into the docking area.
