Re: Day in History
One of those Michigan regiments was the 27th Michigan which was composed of mainly Copper Country men. In company C, one of these fellows was Anton Gipp. Anton was the progenitor of the Gipp family of the Copper Country and George's Grandfather. The 27th Michigan formed as a result of the Lincoln's July 1862 call for recruits. The regiment was in combat from June 1863 to the end in April 1865. It was also one the few regiments to serve both on in the West (Kentucky and Tennessee)and with the Army of the Potomac in Virginia. The 27th was part of 9th (Burnside's) Crops and was attached to the Army of the Potomac in time to participate in Grant's campaigns in Virginia. Anton Gipp was wounded at the "Angle" during the battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse, survived, and stayed with the 27th until it was mustered out in August 1865; he was a sergeant. Anton was in his 40's while in the army which makes his record all the more remarkable. George maybe the more famous, but Anton certainly was a hero in his own right.
The 27th Michigan was involved in 29 "engagements" and suffered a 63% casualty rate. Coming up for a Day in History is July 30th 1864 when the 27th participated in the infamous Battle of the Crater at Petersburg, VA.

Love the pics! Remember being that free and only having to think about doing something fun on a hot summer day? I can almost hear the giggles.
