No matter what shore you want to set sail from on Lake Superior, there are a number of places you can launch your boat, Big Traverse is one of them. Jake Cooper snapped today's top photo, looking out toward the channel that will take you into Lake Superior. This spot is rich with commercial fishing history and there are still a couple fish tugs docked there to see. The last two shots were snapped by Carl Kiilunen from the opposite angle of Jake's photo. First, looking back at the boat landing and then from a little further down the canal. Neat perspective in both scenes, just reversing the direction, so you get a look at Big Traverse coming and going.

Big Traverse once showed its Superior fishing history with a display of 3 or 4 wooden net-drying racks along the stamp sand (Big Lake side) shore. After many years, the racks disintegrated. Sad to see. I think one resident in the area has saved one of the racks. Pete Edison had racks displayed at his place on Isle Royale. As I recall, he said the racks were constructed entirely out of wood--no hardware, nails, etc., being used--an impressive construction, plus being esthetically quite beautiful. They freely swiveled to allow drying. I've often thought that one or two should be on display at the county museum because they do represent the fishing industry which has been so important to the Keweenaw.

The Keweenaw County Historical Society has a very nice commercial fishing exhibit at the Eagle Harbor lighthose complex. There photos of how it used to look in Big Traverse as well as other harbors in area.

By Scott Niska (Sniska) on Monday, July 12, 2010 - 12:53 pm:

There are probably many more than the one I know of, but there is a Prince's Point in Houghton on the canal by MTU's Rozsa Center.

This was my Grandfathers home and then my uncles. My Dad and his brother fished from this dock for over 50 years. Much of the fishing heritage is on display at the Fishing Museum in Eagle Harbor. Thanks for sharing the pictures.
