If you're looking for a safe harbor or a rustic outdoor campground in an out-of-the-way place, then Witz's Marina is where you want to be. Marsha Galbraith was recently at this sheltered harbor, located 16 miles northeast of L'Anse in the small community of Skanee. It is a family owned and operated summer haven, featuring 50 campsites and a large marina, so the slate slab covered store is kept busy all summer with customers coming and going. The big attractions for the summer are 4th of July, when they host a community picnic and even have their own small parade through the campground. Then on Labor Day they hold their own version of the "Bridge Walk," again hosting a community picnic for all to enjoy. So, as their website says: "Whatever your reason may be, we're sure you'll enjoy your time with us. So whatcha waitin' for? Come on up and don't forget your fishing pole!"

Witz Marina is a favorite spot of mine! So peaceful! The Full Circle Superior couple walked through the Skanee area not long ago and had a picture of a bear they came upon on their walk!

Beautiful area--halfway and out of the way on the way to Marquette from Houghton--which leads to Marquette and Negaunee and the voting for the humane society. As of today Negaunee has .98 percent of the votes compared to the top group which has 3.45 percent. Are people helping the Negaunee group out the way they helped the Houghton group?

Thanks, Marsha!

These photos sure sent me back. My uncle used to stay at Witz's and fish on Huron Bay and out at the Huron Islands. I can remember going there in the 60's when they were just getting started and seeing the crane they used to create the harbor. Back then they sold ice frozen in milk cartons. My uncle knew the Witz's really well, and I remember him talking to Vivan in the CB radio from across Keweenaw Bay when we were driving up north of Baraga. Vivan's handle was "Harbormaster". Over the years, they kept adding to the slate on the walls of the store and house. It's a great place to visit!

JAD,
Yes, I've been voting for the Negaunee group. I initially started out voting for the Houghton animal rescue. As I watched the daily standings, it just seemed that if Houghton could not win the overall contest, why not try to move the grand prize just down the road a bit to Negaunee. I wish there was a good method for pasty users to settle on one shelter to give their support to. It was really exciting to watch how the Houghton site came out of nowhere and then over time won it all. Regardless, the prize will help animals somewhere.

It looks to be so cozy! Thanks for the pictures and the info. I never knew it existed!! Wish I were a camper, but I prefer camping in a hotel, lol!!!

Yes, we've been going to our camp on pte. abbaye all my life(and all my mom's,too) and always enjoy a trip over to witz's. the lady in charge related to us that her father had carried all that slate over from arvon in his truck, load after load, and did all that slate work himself. it is such a beautiful, neat place...

JAD or Doug: yes there is a good way - just do what Donna did and post a link and ask for support every day, don't wait for someone else. A friendly, appreciative reminder and a convenient tool (i.e. link) to facilitate does wonders.

The calm water and long shadows give such a peaceful feel in these pics. Nice spot.

JAD, I am voting for the shelter in Negaunee also, since they threw their support to the Houghton shelter last time, and I like to support the UP. I've been going back to the "sand shark" Pasty Cam page from last week and voting through the link that you posted there, but don't always remember to do that. A link posted daily would be wonderful, and result in more people voting, I'm sure. I think I read that there will be more Challenges in the future, with opportunities for other shelters to win. :)

wow that is a incredible building with all those slate slabs. I've never seen anything like that.
I'll have to wander there someday.

JAD Negaunee has my two votes daily!!

Beautiful pictures, I've never been there.

JAD~~~~~~You are getting my vote~~~~~~~

The link each day is a good idea. Wish I could do it, but not here early.

I love the slate too. Marsha, my dad always took us for trips to the
slate quarry (with all of the snakes sunning themselves) after we
visited his friends at the Indian Cemetery--another of my favorite
spots.
