I have seen the real caption for this photo; it read:
Here is a photo of Mr. and Mrs. Heinrich Von Gluhwein from nearby Houghton, standing on their marble they used in the First Annual World Championship Marble Shooting Competition, held at an undisclosed location in the wilds of Upper Michigan. The couple took first place in the Couples Category of this yearly event. Said Mr. Von Gluhwein after the competition, "Man, are my thumbs sore!!".
Hard to say what type of rock that is from the B&W photo. It looks to be a basalt boulder judging by the fracture pattern. I will say it looks like it's on the lakeshore, which would make sense that it is basalt.
