Here's a couple getting UP in the world, back about the 1890's. The only caption that appears on this picture from the U.P. Digitization Center is "Photograph of a man and woman standing on a boulder in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan." There has to be more of a story than that. Maybe we can come up with a few.

In case you saw the Daily Mining Gazette this past week talk about PastyFest being in July, yesterday they printed a correction, that it is June 25-26 in Calumet. Hope you can make it!

Have a good week :o)

Last Sunday's subject was about a painter, did anyone identify this person or anyone in the pictures ? Speaking of old, my daughter who lives on Ugly Creek, in Duck River , Tennessee is having a birthday today. Happy Birthday Karmen Marie.

Historic family pictures, I am in the process of transfering many of our pictures going back to the 1950's. Will try to mark and identify relatives etc for coming generations. My little VIEWPOINT machine only cost $29 and to date I have copied 800 pictures and have boxes of them to yet transfer.

Does anyone recognize that rock (Capt, Paul)? It looks like it could be on the shoreline. I wonder if it is still there. Let's put out an APB (All Pasty Bulletin.

Sorry everybody, but that rock's no longer there. My brothers and I rolled it down the hill when we were kids.

JUST KIDDING!

By Donna (Donna) on Sunday, June 13, 2010 - 01:24 pm:

That's all big rock too...no little pebbles and no AGATES!!! (so..guess who won't be hanging there! LOL)

How did Mrs Rock get up there? With a sky hook? That's not your normal climbing gear she has on.

I don't know if the Houghton Mining-Gazette carried this, but an American icon made its final appearance in other newspapers, today:

Thomas are you talking about Little Orphan Annie? Heard about it on Today or Sunday Morning. Guess it'll still be produced in other ways but not the comics. Haven't seen it for a long time around here anyways.

I recently came across a genealogy of my great- grand parents, my moms', dads' parents. There was even a wedding photo of my great-grandparents from 1904. Then it went on to my grandpas', sister and her husband and their family. I even found my great-grandparents grave today along with my grandpas' sister and her husbands' grave. I love stuff like this. Talked to a couple of relatives, too. Found out a second cousin, my grandpas'-sisters', grandson put the genealogy together.

Anyway, love stuff like that.

There could be a narrow staircase or ladder hidden behind the rock.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Sunday, June 13, 2010 - 08:18 pm:

I have seen the real caption for this photo; it read:

Here is a photo of Mr. and Mrs. Heinrich Von Gluhwein from nearby Houghton, standing on their marble they used in the First Annual World Championship Marble Shooting Competition, held at an undisclosed location in the wilds of Upper Michigan. The couple took first place in the Couples Category of this yearly event. Said Mr. Von Gluhwein after the competition, "Man, are my thumbs sore!!".

Hard to say what type of rock that is from the B&W photo. It looks to be a basalt boulder judging by the fracture pattern. I will say it looks like it's on the lakeshore, which would make sense that it is basalt.

It looks like she is reslly not standing on it.
