Point Abbaye is another one of those adventures that I've yet to set off on to visit, but is definitely on my "bucket list." Folks claim the trip out there is an adventure in itself, but Matt Behrens gives us a taste of what you'll see, should you venture out there yourself. It's one of Lake Superior's rocky shorelines and those rocks show off layers and layers upon each one. You can also see the Huron Islands from this vantage point, as evidenced in the second photo, off to the right side. This is definitely one of the Keweenaw's "special" places and well worth checking out.

What a great state (Michigan) to explore. ;O)

What beautiful cross-bedded sandstones in the last photo.....

Mary: I believe those are the Huron Mountains in the second shot that appear to the right, as opposed to the Islands which can be seen (barely) on the horizon in the center of the photo.

Very nice...thanks for the information.

Very pretty pictures. I love the rocks and water.

The CCHS cannot win the current contest because they won the last one. Lets help the Marquette County Humane Society by casting our votes for them. They helped us win the first one!

Capt. Paul you are absolutely right about the islands and the mountains. Pt. Abbaye is my second home. Oh how I would love to be there now. Thanks for the awesome photos, Matt.

What stunning views. This could another wanna-be-there in my dreams. Just how can I find this place? Is it public access? Now I need to use all these photos as background.

Great info and photos of another great spot in the Copper Country I need to get to...

Anybody out there with French and/or Native American language skills who can translate the names on the sign?

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Monday, June 7, 2010 - 12:18 pm:

How's this:
"Pointe Abbaye": "Point Abbey", or perhaps "Abbey Point"?
and
"Pointe aux Baies": "Point of Bays"

(Just my guess, but of course I am not an expert in French!)

When you go to Point Abbaye, be sure to take the tip trail to get right out onto the open rock at the tip. The view out there is completely incredible, one of those fairly rare places on the Great Lakes where you can look in several directions across long reaches of water to land. You get a sense of space and distance unlike anywhere else. You'll find that the Huron Islands appear closer than in the photos above. Not far off the point itself, maybe 600 to 1000 feet,is the Point Abbaye Reef, which shoals to only about 6 feet; it's a sight to behold if you can get out there on a day when a strong southwest wind is blowing out of Huron Bay, and meeting big swells still coming in from the north from prior weather. The waves stack up on the reef and that wind just rips the tops off the waves. The weather setup for these conditions is pretty rare, but it's one of the truest scenes of wilderness and the power of nature you'll ever see.

that sandstone looks a LOT like the sandstone at the Mosquito River at Pictured Rocks.

By Morning Glory (Lucylu) on Tuesday, June 8, 2010 - 10:35 am:

Gorgeous pictures! Thanks. I can feel the cool breeze on my face, and the smell the fresh air that has a touch of pine and the freezing cold water on my feet. It is in the 90's in Missouri today. Wish I were there enjoyng the UP and my family. Every time I see Lake Superior I hear the song, "How Great Thou Art!" I know my mansion will be next to a Lake like Superior.
