Looking at these photos from Kathy Ceno, it's hard to tell how close she had to get for them, but that Mourning Dove mom, sure wasn't skiddish about her snapping away it seems. Of course she probably was being overly protective of her little brood, as she was sitting on to keep warm and safe. Kathy found this nest in her backyard, here UP North and has been keeping an eye on it, watching the progress of the eggs finally hatching, so when she noticed Mom gone from her watch over the chicks, she hurriedly grabbed a shot of the fuzzy looking hatchlings. It looks like there may be at least two bumps that could be heads in that nest. Perhaps Kathy can update us on how the babies are doing and how many there really are there. Amazing mother nature at her finest, here in the Keweenaw... nothing sweeter than the birth of little creatures in the wild.

Mary...you mentioned a benefit for Roy Britz yesterday. I won't be in Houghton this weekend, but do you have an address or contact for mail-in support? Thanks!

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Friday, May 21, 2010 - 08:30 am:

Ooops...never mind, Mary. I just noticed that Dan Judnick at the Houghton County Sherrif's Dept. is the contact.

Mary says: Yes, Alex, you can contact Dan Judnich or whomever answers the phone at the Houghton County Sheriff's Dept. (906) 482-0055. They can give you more information and an address to send donations too. THANKS so much!!! :-)

Cute pics! We have a mourning dove that builds a nest in the corner of the eavestrough where the downspot is. We leave it alone until all is done with the nesting!

I love mourning doves. There's something so special about them.

We have a Mourning Dove nesting in one of our Blue Spruce trees. She is getting used to me mowing around it and is sitting tighter the more times I mow. Some times she doesn't even fly out as I go by!

I enjoy listening to these Doves early mornings before the day gets going. So relaxing!

By Donna (Donna) on Friday, May 21, 2010 - 02:51 pm:

I love the doves too...they are such gorgeous birds and sound so serene....did you know you can tell the male by the pink on the "cheeks"...(Or so I read someplace!)

Different subject: If anyone is interested in anything Scotland...there's an Electric Scotland website/newsletter that I subscribe to, and they are not getting the subscribers (free) they want. So if anyone is interested, I am humbly asking you to peek/sign up:

Hi Donna, thank you for the reference. I tried to sign up, since I am 25% Scottish, but alas, the administrator banned my email address, for heaven's sakes? It is a perfectly valid email address that I have used for many years.

We have mourning doves where I live, 2. You can hear them mourning, afternoon, and evening (lol).

Donna, thanks for the Scottish info! My hubby and myself are both very much Scottish, aye, even the way we spell our last name, Thomson, is the Scottish spelling, it's no surprise that our love for Scottish Terriers has been our breed of choice for many, many years now!
