On this Mother's Day morning my waking thought was a question: Wonder what pictures of U.P. mothers can be found on the Internet? Using search terms on the Google image page, it directed me right back to Pasty Central. A couple of years ago Carol Fritz uploaded this shot to one of our forum pages, and somehow I missed seeing it at the time. Taken at Beacon Hill in the 1940's, the ladies are (L to R): Minnie Loukinen Luke, Ina Naasko, Hilia Kuosa, and Tekla Kuosa, Carol's grandmother (if I read the notes correctly). Poking around the archives I realized there are a number of things I have missed among the 15,000+ pages and 50,000+ images folks have uploaded to Pasty Central through the years.

Beacon Hill recently came to our attention as we prepared the application for Pasty.NET's "Fiber-to-the-Home" project in the Keweenaw Peninsula. This small community is near the extreme southwest corner of the proposed service area. The area had a much bigger population back in the copper boom days, when the Freda milling operation was in full swing.

Happy Mother's Day greetings to your family from ours. Have a good week :o)

Charlie, glad to see you didn't freeze in the car yesterday. Any news on the expectant mom?

Becky was the one who eventually let me back in the house. By the way, it was a faulty front door latch that locked me out, which we fixed yesterday afternoon.

Baby hasn't come yet. Reminds me of a saying my Mom used to have: "A watched pot never boils". She was teaching us to be busy with other things while we wait for something to happen. The wisdom of a Mother :o)

"HAPPY MOTHERS DAY", My Mother-in-law came home yesterday from the hospital. We are happy she is with us on this day. I sure wish that I could give my Mom a big hug.

May God bless all moms today and the children they brought into the world and nurtured!

By Cheryl Rozman (Cotton) on Sunday, May 9, 2010 - 11:51 pm:

To All Mothers
"M" is for the million things she gave me,
"O" means only that she's growing old,
"T" is for the tears she shed to save me,
"H" is for her heart of purest gold:
"E" is for her eyes, with love-light shining,
"R" means right, and right she'll always be,
Put them all together, they spell "MOTHER"
A word that means the WORLD to me.

I was taught this poem at school years ago & sang it to my Mom on Mothers Day. I wish my Mother a special Mother's Day along with all other Mothers whether she's with you or has passed to the world beyond.. I MISS YOU MOM.

Hey! I haven't looked on here in a while and Minnie, Ina, and Hilia
are my great-aunts and I am named for my great grandmother
Tekla Katariina Itaniemi Kuosa. What a nice surprise.
