Not only does all the beautiful springtime weather bring of flowers and green grass, but it also brings back the boats on the water. Traditionally one of the first you see in the area, is the buoy tender and Taana Kalliainen captured the Alder in the act of setting the buoy out at the lower entrance to the Portage River Canal. After it put that one in place it headed up the canal, I'm sure along it's way to set the other buoys needed to navigate the Keweenaw waterways safely.

And what a great looking ship it is!

Is there any website to tell me when the ships would be up and down the canal that we can go and watch them? Thanks.

There is no vessel passage page covering the Portage Canal system.
Construction and steel production is on the slight rise here in Troll land so we will actually see more freighters on the Great Lakes this year. Hope you all get to see a few going thru like we did in years past.

Thank You for the info and I do miss going out to Belle Isle and the Detroit River and watching the freighters go through. We use to go early on Sunday mornings and watch them.

Beautiful ship but I preferred the "Sundew" which the Alder replaced. The Sundew was stationed at Charlevoix when we lived there and I enjoyed watching 'her' break the ice on Round Lake, right outside our door. woo-hoo!:D Good ol' days!
