Is the boat being assisted by a tug or is it all one vessel?????

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Friday, April 23, 2010 - 08:04 am:

Nice photos, especially the rivers and falls.
The photo of Detroit is great as well. Detroit can shine if it wants to.

By Deb L. (Lakegirl) on Friday, April 23, 2010 - 08:32 am:

I believe the boat in the picture is Great Lakes Trader (not positive). But it is a "tug and barge". The "barge" is an ore boat with the stern basically cut off and re-equiped to connect to the "tug". There has been a move to do this for several reason. One of the reasons for doing this is a tug/barge combination does not need to have as many "crew" on board as a "conventional" ship does, thus saving the company money. I believe if this Great Lakes Trader she was destine for the Port Duluth/Superior. (It arrived here yesterday evening)

Super photo--all of todays photos are super. Maybe Pasty Cam should have a "Photo Contest" like Lake Superior Magazine has ever year. I think there are some awesome photographers from Pasty.

The boat was called the Reserve before being converted to a tug barge. Now it is the James L. Kuber and tug Victory. If you go to this website their are picture of the conversion.

Thanks for correcting me, I wasn't positive about the boat but knew it was a tug/barge and from a distance they both look similar. My son can identify them better than me--to be young and have a photographic memory. Sorry if I misrepresented anything. Have a good day everyone.

On the web site that John listed there are a lot of pictures that Dick Lund took at the bottom of the page. In the 6th one(Reserve - close up of pilot house) I think that's my son standing at the railing on the spar deck. He also worked with the conversion crew thru the winter.

Wonderful photos.

I kept ship on the Reserve with my Dad, Mom & sister many years ago. Brings back many wonderful memories. I hated to see the conversion but that's the sign of the times. It was old but could be put to good use yet.
