This week's Shoebox Memory transports us to the Norway City Hall auditorium on an April night in 1913. Attention is focused on Paul Soderlund delivering his lines as "The Captain of Plymouth", an operetta that included his classmates Ella Blomgren as Priscilla, Thomas Cuff as Erasmus, Harold Lindahl as John Alden, Catherine Calcaterra as Mercy, Irene Van Kerckhove as Katonka and Will Elliason as Chief Waftawamuth (don't ask me to pronounce it). This treasure was scanned in 2003 by the staff at Superiorland Library Cooperative, as part of the growing "U.P. Digitization Center"

This past Thursday students gathered in another theatre - this time in Calumet - to take part in the local history "Smackdown". The team known as "Parker's Pirates" from Ontonagon took first place in the event, hosted by Keweenaw National Historic Park. (The guy with the sword in today's photo reminded me to mention the Pirates.) Wonder if anyone has any pictures of the Smackdown? I'll bet the costumes weren't quite as elaborate.

Have a good week :o)

MiningGazette.com had a story about the History Smackdown. And you're right about the changing styles.

At first, I thought maybe this was an early performance by the Village People.... ;-)

All kidding aside; it's great that there are still some young folks out there that are still interested in history, especially mining history of the area.
