When the ice forms during the winter months on Lake Superior, it often shifts in and out, in and out, all along Lake Superior's shoreline. The top photo today, from Joyce Tormala shows us one of the results of all that back and forth action... heaps and mounds of Superior rocks. It looks just like someone came along and formed a bank of these stones to keep the water from rising any further up on shore.

Speaking of coming to shore....what about Joyce's second photo? That's quite a "cloud" formation hovering over the water. Joyce called it, "Incoming fog," so I'm assuming that's what it is....a bank of fog making it's way to shore. You can see the sheer white, spread out beneath the "cloud," but it seems to be just a light fog that you can still see right through. I wonder if Joyce waited on shore that day to watch it come all the way in?

Makes me drool for some agate picking time!

Lake Superior is so wonderful....I don't care where you are on that majestic lake...it is sacred territory.

Wondering about the Shelter+ Challenge results?

Winners will be announced on Wednesday, April 21st. Thank you for your patience while we verify all vote totals! Your participation has already done more for your shelter than you might imagine.

"This program has been a wonderful opportunity for Petfinder.com members," says Liz Neuschatz, director of the Petfinder.com Foundation. "The winners have something to really celebrate, but even those who don't win have benefited from their communities coming together to act on behalf of homeless pets."

Your involvement with your shelter, your community, and the thousands of animals these groups rescue every year is an inspiration. Click here to see our first 24 weekly winners and learn more about the Shelter+ Challenge. We're also gearing up for our next Shelter+ Challenge, which begins on May 17th. Thank you for your support!

Where's Paco and the feline followers?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 - 07:27 am:

Morning! I was wondering the same thing that Janie was wondering. You seldom see pictures from Joyce without her animals. It just doesn't seem right, does it? I love seeing pictures of the lake without the snow, though.

Thanks for the info, Judy.

By Helen Marie Chamberlain (Helen) on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 - 08:28 am:

Wonderful pictures! Thanks.

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 - 09:25 am:

I spent a considerable amount of time yesterday checking out Joyce's albums. They are so wonderful especially her animals. She sees the little things we pass and never even notice. Thank you Joyce.

WE WON !!!!!

By Deb Lynn (Deblynn) on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 - 10:26 am:

I remember the best place ever to watch a storm moving in across the lake. It was on top of Brock Mtn. On a fall vacation. I will never forget it. I may live among the Trolls but my heart is still a Yooper!

By Donna (Donna) on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 - 12:18 pm:

WOW...what FABULOUS news!!! I got this email today too:

Dear Fellow Employees, Family and Friends,

Yippee Yahoooooooo!!!!!!!!! The Copper Country Humane Society has won The Shelter Challenge at Petfinder.Com. The $10,000.00 prize is so needed in these hard times and the good works at the CCHS is evident in our communities. They have a wonderful spay/neuter program which is reducing the number of unwanted animals. On behalf of the CC Humane Society, the employees and volunteers there, and especially the dear animals served, a heart-felt thanks. We couldn't have done it without all your support.

The Challenge begins again May 17. Voting takes seconds and so much good comes of it. CCHS cannot win the Challenge twice in the same calendar year. I am thinking it would be good to get behind the Marquette Shelter and keep the $ in the U.P., someplace special.

Again, thank you so very much!!!

Now....HOW COOL IS THIS??? CONGRATS team Pasty!

THE POWER OF THE PASTY.....it truly did wonders!

When's the Tshirts coming out Charlie? :D

By Deb L. (Lakegirl) on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 - 12:31 pm:

I'm really happy for CCHS, it was a lot of fun to be part of this. It was an awesome priveledge to lend my support to such a worthy cause. We have two rescue dogs and they are the best friends I have ever had!! Way to go and looking forward to May 17 when we can lend our support again. The daily reminders from Donna make it really easy. WAY TO GO!!!!!!

By Warren Gilbert (Warren) on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 - 12:34 pm:

Congratulations CCHS! Great work coming from so far behind!!!

By Lisa R. (Sisugirl) on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 - 01:16 pm:

Congratulations, CCHS!! I'm so excited for you! Thank you to my fellow Pasty-Cammers -- I'm so glad that we all pulled together to make this happen. It was a lot of fun to be a part of this.

I agree, it would be neat to select another U.P. shelter to help for the next challenge. Besides the one in Marquette, isn't there one in Iron Mountain or Ontonagon? It was one of those listed in the Michigan runnings early on.

By Mike (Upboundeh) on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 - 01:25 pm:

A Big Congrats to CCHS!

By Uncle Chuck at Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 - 02:23 pm:

Congrats to CCHS- Donna & troops, take a bow!

By Smfwlk (Trollperson) on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 - 02:36 pm:

Just a thought/suggestion: since the UP won one, how about voting for one in the LP next challenge? Let's keep the dollars in Michigan.

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 - 02:44 pm:

Thank goodness! I haven't put that much effort into anything since I bought by Goldwing.

By Uncle Chuck at Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 - 02:49 pm:

Alex, it's post 4/15, thought you'd be Wingin it Hoss?

By Janet Boatman (Janetnwohio) on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 - 03:35 pm:

How great the shelter won, I live in Ohio and voted every day and I think I was as excited as if I lived next door to it. Great job people and it just goes to show you what people can do if they pull together.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 - 04:23 pm:

Great photos.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 - 05:03 pm:

Hip Hip Hooray for the CCHS and all of the Pasty Cammers who
voted!

By Yooperguide (Huntandfish) on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 - 05:04 pm:

I know this is sad but had to post it for the CCHS. Worked at an animal shelter one year and couldn't believe the cold-hearted people that just didn't want their dogs anymore, broke my heart. It's not so much strays, just ignorant dog owners;

A DOG SITS WAITING
by Kathy Flood

A dog sits waiting in the cold autumn sun.
Too faithful to leave, too frightened to run.

He's been here for days now with nothing to do
But sit by the road, waiting for you.

He can't understand why you left him that day.
He thought you and he were stopping to play.

He's sure you'll come back, and that's why he stays.
How long will he suffer? How many more days?

His legs have grown weak, his throat's parched and dry.
He's sick now from hunger and falls, with a sigh.

He lays down his head and closes his eyes.
I wish you could see
how a waiting dog dies.

By a m hill (Lvcamnotes) on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 - 06:15 pm:

joanie, yes it is sad. and it also portrays the
incredible loyalness of canines.

By Richard L. Barclay (Notroll) on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 - 07:29 pm:

We could vote for the Dennison folks, too. I see where they were number 2 twice now. They would have won if they didn't slack off for a month or more, though. We were persistent. Or we could vote for a different one each week and get whoever the weekly win. Lots of ways to do it, going to be interesting to see how we work it out. I know this bunch can get it done, however we choose.

By Donna (Donna) on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 - 07:39 pm:

Mr. Barclay...excellent plan! We could do all kinds of plotting on here! LOL

Yooperguide...excellent poem there. And one of the big reasons WE ALL pulled together and did what we took weeks to do! Thank you for that reminder!

And again...thank you TEAM PASTY...and all the other folks around the world that helped to do this. It truly was an awesome time!

We are all One!

By Donna (Donna) on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 - 10:10 pm:

UPDATE...I just got this email:

Hi everyone,

According to the Daily Mining Gazette, there will also be a winner in the Shelter Challenge for the shelter getting the most number of votes for the ENTIRE year!

I wasn't aware of this, so, forget about the "getting behind the MQT shelter" and continue voting for the CCHS each day. Who knows, we could have another $10,000.00 coming our way. There will be 2 more challenges this year, with the next one starting May 17th. I hope it isn't too much to ask for your continued support. I don't mean to sound greedy! :-)

Thanks again for supporting the defenseless animals with no voice!

The contest is the first of three that will be offered by The Animal Rescue Site and Petfinder.com this year, with the next starting on May 17. If the CCHS is able to accumulate the most votes through the entire year, it will be awarded another $10,000 grant.

By Greta Jones (Urbanescapees) on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 - 11:40 pm:

Nice photos, Joyce!

By Lisa R. (Sisugirl) on Thursday, April 22, 2010 - 12:33 pm:

Donna, in that case, I definitely think we ought to focus on CCHS for the rest of the year. Next year, we can choose another shelter. Just my opinion, but others may not agree with this tactic...
