While out and about in the woods recently, Brenda Leigh spotted this sign about a deer management area and when she sent it to me, I wondered, "How do you manage wild deer in the woods?" Then I opened the next picture Brenda sent, which came from her hubby, Jim Solko's, game camera and I knew the answer to my wondering.... you don't!

Look at those two deer, standing up on their hind legs like they're doing a Spring Dance. Well, at least that's what I'd like to think they're doing, when in reality, I know they were really having a small battle about who's the bigger and the best. I'm not sure if it was over something to eat or perhaps it had something to do with the other set of legs you can see by the deer on the left. That's assuming they're both bucks, who'd want to be impressing a deer of the female persuasion and this time of year. Without antlers, I have a hard time telling one from the other. What do you think?

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Friday, April 9, 2010 - 05:40 am:

I think their posture is superb, extension is great, they're training for "Dancing with the Stars".

There's definitely a battle happening there. "Battle of the Bucks" :D.

CRITTERS....we LOVE critters and it shows! Keep voting folks! Thanks so much!

Good morning all,
It looks as though the news article has given us some new blood for votes. Here's the latest, though I had to fudge for Wed. as I was out of town for the day. We still have a chance folks but they are rallying friends and folks to their cause, too, and they didn't get to be number one by chance. So, it's up to us to call out for help! Let's go for it.
A little over one week to go!

It is often surprising to find the great heights a group of people can attain by merely being on the level....

Great photo! Looks like a high-5 for the surviving dear season.

Oh my gosh, Alex....that is hilarious!!

Hi
What I think the sign means is that the area is being managed, in terms of creating an optimum habitat, to provide "quality" deer.
English is a fun language, especially in the shorthand needed for signs. I remember reading "Door is Alarmed" when what was meant was "Alarm Activated on this Door"; still made me want to say "there, there, calm down, door".

By ILMHitCC (Ilmhitcc) on Friday, April 9, 2010 - 11:13 am:

Glad to see that area has quality deer. We have slow children hanging around our church parking lot.

...or the second photo would make a great TV commercial: "Hey, I just saved a bundle on my insurance by switching to Geico."

By Lisa R. (Sisugirl) on Friday, April 9, 2010 - 11:52 am:

Great pictures today, especially the second one. Wow. This is definitely the season.

CCHS is now closer to first place than to third. Go CCHS!

By Richard L. Barclay (Notroll) on Friday, April 9, 2010 - 01:16 pm:

Quality deer only need to apply, in the second photo the deer on the left is being welcomed into the herd with a very high two and the next deer in line is patiently waiting her turn to be checked for quality.

Oh, deer!

Greetings all:

I'm guessing from the sign that it was posted by the Michigan Branch of the QDMA, http://michiganqdma.com/QDMA.html , and represents a group of local hunters that are concerned about the overall health of the local UP deer population.

This is not a bad thing for the deer or the local economy. You might want to look into this association.
