There are fishermen and then there are Yooper fishermen, who go out in the coldest winter weather and sit on the ice to try to catch a few fish. Today's photographer, Steve Bashaw took the next logical step in the progression of cold water fishing, by hopping in his boat with tackle and camera in tow. So not only did Steve catch a few nice fish, he also captured a number of good shots to share with us. I was actually a bit surprised to see that the icy coating from the splashing and freezing of Lake Superior's waters, is still hanging on, what with the sun and warmer temps we've been having. It makes for some beautiful pictures, but a treacherous walk out to the Lighthouse if you decide to tackle a trip out there by way of the breakwall. For now, Steve's method of getting a better view of the light is definitely the best choice. In the last photo, you can see the ice there floating not far away, preventing the boat from going very much further out.

If you're wondering how the fishing was, here's what Steve called, "the catch of the day."

Catch of the day

Nice photos! The third photo of the bending fishing rod feels like I am actually sitting in the boat.

The Copper Country Shelter gets two of my votes everyday, one from my home computer and one from work!!

Hey Donna, I've been voting almost everyday for CCHS. I live outside Duluth/Superior and I too have shelter/rescue pets at home. They are the best. Great Photos today--that fishy looks yummy yummy!! Have a great day everyone its actually cold one here, its 16 out with a windchill factor at around 0, strange with no snow and its sunny.

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Thursday, March 25, 2010 - 09:28 am:

Nice catches Steve....the photos and the phishy! Bet that made a couple delish meals! How fortunate you live near enough to the Big Lake to enjoy it in many ways. Just be careful when you're out there.

The iron ore shipping season has started a litte earlier this year so lets hope it will call for hiring of additional workers in the state of Michigan.

The Eagle River Inn was built pre 1958 as I remember going there after my sailing season that year aboard the SS EDMUND FITZGERALD, just to view the majestic Lake Superior from shore.

Very nice photos. I just LOVE all of the tones of blue! Thanks!

By Lisa R. (Sisugirl) on Thursday, March 25, 2010 - 12:55 pm:

Wow, there's still snow on the rock walls? That surprises me, seeing how it seems to be melting everywhere else.

I just tried to vote, and either the site is down or my company is blocking that site now. I'll try again. Fortunately, I also vote from our computers at home.

Hey Lisa, does your company watch what the employees do on the computers?

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Thursday, March 25, 2010 - 03:40 pm:

Great photos.

By Mel, MN (Mehollop) on Thursday, March 25, 2010 - 04:05 pm:

Deb L - yah, definitely a chilly day here in northern MN today, but I was glad to finally have a frozen day! Needed to get out to a spruce bog to measure some trees, and today allowed me to do it without getting my feet wet. Had been hoping to snowmobile to the location, but all the snow went away too early. Back to playing in the puddles tomorrow.

Hey guys (and gals),
Just wanted to let everyone know that Dr. Nat is alive and well in England. I talked with her yesterday and she said there have been some really good lectures and some horrible ones. Her session was today and when I talked with her she sounded like she was ready for them. After breakfast tomorrow morning, she is on her way to Stonehenge and then on to Wales for a couple days before heading back to Glasgow to fly out and back to the US. I'm sure she'll have plenty of stories to tell.....

By Lisa R. (Sisugirl) on Thursday, March 25, 2010 - 09:22 pm:

Hi Mickill. I'm sure they monitor our internet access, but we're allowed to access most sites during lunch or during breaks. As long as we don't abuse the privilege, it's not a problem.

Capt. Paul, sounds like Dr. Nat is at a conference? I'm so jealous she's getting to see a bit of the British Isles! Sounds fun ...

By Laurie B. (Ratherberiding) on Friday, March 26, 2010 - 08:43 am:

Steve enjoyed reading all your comments about his pictures. Thanks. I think he's crazy to be out there fishing when the water is only 35 degrees, but he loves it!! We've had one meal from the fish and it was delish!

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Friday, March 26, 2010 - 04:03 pm:

This is slightly off topic, but has 2 do with the U.P. In the past, I've read about the 51st State of Superior. However, in the mid-1970's, I believe I saw a bumper sticker that referred to it as the 51st State of North Michigan. I was wondering if anybody else ever heard of that.
Laurie, since you said the fish was delish, are you a fan of Rachael Ray? (lol)

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, March 27, 2010 - 05:59 pm:

Nice, Steve! I'm just going back to catch up on stuff. How come when Ron's with you you guys don't catch such good looking fish? Great pictures and a great fish!!!
