Donna MacIntosh was out with camera in hand recently, to document the departure of the many inches of snow we've received here UP North this winter. With the unseasonably warmer temps, the sunshine and then top it off with rain, the snow has really taken a hit around here. But as it's going, it is also making some artistic natural shapes as Donna shows us with these two photos. The top one is almost hard to look at, since Donna somehow captured the extreme brightness of those shining rays, just as if you're looking directly at the sun. Then with her second photo, she captured the bright blue of the sky as a backdrop to the intricate design that nature is creating. What was it Joe Kirkish called this type of art recently? I remember now... "ephemeral" art, meaning short-lived. That describes these formations quite well.

A coworker said the top pic almost looks like a unicorn! That was a fun little walk around the back yard! Amazing what Mother Nature puts out there!

14 carat photos!

By Jacobsville (Barb) on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 - 08:49 am:

The second photo reminds me of a seahorse.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 - 08:53 am:

That first one looks like diamonds. Those are beautiful.

By Bugsy (Bugsyrocker) on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 - 08:59 am:

That first photo is amazing. Very, very well done. Haven't seen a photo like that before.

Anyone going to the Snowman Burning Day at LSSU this Friday?

By Eddyfitz (Eddyfitz) on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 - 09:06 am:

Lakes lost 78 - 57 to Bark River Harris last evening. The Lakes had a great season.

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 - 09:46 am:

I'd say the second one is definately a dgxpleet from planet Zeno. I saw 5 one time in the 3rd hemisphere. Was cloudy that day.

Rowdy:
I really think you need to get out more...

:)

By Dunerat (Dunerat) on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 - 10:26 am:

David --

If Rowdy got out more, maybe he'd get funnier. Maybe he'd get un-funnier. I'm not sure I'd want to risk it. Rowdy, stay inside.

By Gary W. Long (Gary_in_co) on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 - 12:13 pm:

Everybody sees something different. To me, the first photo looks like ice and the second one looks like snow. But that's just me.

By Lisa R. (Sisugirl) on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 - 12:32 pm:

I see a horse in the first one (not seeing a horn that would make it a unicorn). I'm with Jacobsville/Barb on the second one -- looks like a sea horse -- actually two, to my eyes. A mother with a baby riding on her back. Neat pictures!

In case anyone's interested ... What everyone is experiencing here (except for Gary Long) is "pareidolia," the psychological phonemenon of seeing significance or patterns in insignificant or random things. Animals in clouds, the man in the moon, or the Virgin Mary in a grilled cheese sandwich.

Happy St. Urho's Day all!
