From the looks of Brenda Leigh's photos today, she was up bright and early, first to catch the sun rising over an icy Lake Michigan. Then once it was up, to do some exploring of the shapes the ice takes on with the fluctuation in temperatures from the minus degrees, on up into the 30's some days. Brenda thought her second shot looked like a duck, all dressed up in a formal gown...a dressed duck, so to speak. The next one reminded her of a moose skull she once found while hiking out west. Funny how the ice is even hanging on what could pass for a fence pole, like you often she cattle skulls in old western movies. Then Brenda zoomed out in her last photo, to give us a view of the Menominee Light. Nice how the sun's rays are back-lighting the entire scene. Morning splendor on Lake Michigan's shores.

Love the sunrise picture! That's beautiful! Ahhhh, cold duck, alternative to Annie Green Springs and Boone's Farm...back to the 70's with fond memories!

Good eye!

By Kathyrn Laughlin (Kathyl) on Wednesday, February 10, 2010 - 08:08 am:

Hmmm, the ice duck looked more like a loon to me.

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Wednesday, February 10, 2010 - 08:20 am:

Never drank Cold Loon. What's that like anyway?

By CAL, Oshkosh WI (Cal) on Wednesday, February 10, 2010 - 08:37 am:

If these were taken in Menominee MI then technically the body of water is Green Bay.

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Wednesday, February 10, 2010 - 08:46 am:

Does that affect the taste?

By Richard L. Barclay (Notroll) on Wednesday, February 10, 2010 - 09:14 am:

I think the cold duck looks more like an "Albatrice"

By Brenda Leigh (Brownmoose) on Wednesday, February 10, 2010 - 09:19 am:

Is there anyone out there that technically knows about Cal's point. I am often confused because if you look at a map it is the bay called Green Bay but isn't it still considered to be in Lake Michigan. To me it appears it is part of the lake. Isn't Whitefish Bay and Huron Bay and all the other bays still a part of the Lake Superior? It is considered part of lakeshore miles so why would it not be part of the lake per se?

The third picture looks like Scrat. Maybe when he thaws out, he'll get the fossil acorn on top of that post.

...and lets not forget TJ Swan and Mad Dog 20/20.

I was born and raised in Menominee. We never referred to Green Bay as Lake Michigan and, yes, I suspect the water would taste differently today! The light with its fog horn has fond memories. We could hear it all over town. The Ann Arbor ferry docked there (the other side of the breakwater from that shown) and I recall as a very young girl going with my family across Green Bay through Sturgeon Bay, which cuts the Door Peninsula of Wisconsin in
half, into Lake Michigan to cross over to Frankfurt in the LP.

Brenda, I believe that technically, a bay is considered as a part of the major body of water that it is attached to, so that Green Bay is technically part of Lake Michigan. Saginaw Bay is always referred to as Saginaw Bay, but everyone knows that it is part of Lake Huron. So, in short, I agree with you. :-)
