When folks here in the Copper Country get together for a friendly game of baseball this time of year, they make sure to wear their boots and gloves and I don't mean baseball gloves, either. Taana Kalliainen was the team photographer recently, on what she said was a cold winter day at the Alston ball field. How cold you ask? Well, I don't know the actual temperature, but Taana said her camera battery died, her can of pop (soda for all you non-Yoopers) turned to ice and the food that wasn't warm, froze solid. No matter though, the two teams followed all the regular rules and played nine innings anyway. That kept them warm and I'm betting it was a bit softer sliding into home base with a cushioning of snow, not to mention how much cleaner their "uniforms" must have stayed. Looking at the third picture though, makes me wonder if the grill was there for the tailgaters to warm their hands or to cook the food. :-> Good old fashioned fun in the snow!

Sorry but I'm having trouble figuring out the name and location of the local vet clinic. Can you help so I can vote?

Donna,
Are you asking us to vote for the Copper Country Humane Society - that's the only one that comes up on a search of MI & Houghton? Thanks, Dick

I see that there is plenty of antifreeze on hand in the third photo...of the Busch and Bud variety that is.

Good times! There's another game planned for the 20th of this month and hopefully it won't be as cold. One of my friends opened up a bottle of 'antifreeze' and that even froze! It was so nice to have a fire to stand around and stay warm. :)

In the olden days we played snowshoe softball. You actually WANTED to hit a pop fly because nobody would be able to get to the spot to catch it. Good times, definately.

And here's some of the email I rec'd to put Marquette on the map BIG time!
Congratulations! Michigan ’s very own Marquette has been named one of the 2010 America ’s Dozen Distinctive Destinations by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. We’re proud to share with the world what you no doubt already know -- that cosmopolitan Marquette is not only one of the 100 Best Art Towns in America, but its historic neighborhoods and enchanting downtown make it one of our nation's best heritage travel destinations.
