Robert C. Wetton snapped this shot of the vista from the Quincy Hill, exactly one week ago today. Our temps here in the Keweenaw had been quite unseasonably warm, causing the pools of water that you can see on the Portage Canal ice. We've since cooled back down, so I imagine those puddles of melted ice are once again frozen, but this is a good time to remind all the snowmobilers, that the ice around the Bridge especially, isn't considered stable enough to take chances riding on it. RCW sure found a great vantage point to take in this view... you can even see the Huron Mountains off in the distance.

Speaking of distance, did you know the moon is approximately 238, 857 miles from the earth? That's a lot of miles, so you tell me what size lens, Taana Kalliainen must have used to capture this shot of the Keweenaw full moon over the weekend. It's such a clear photo, that I bet if there really was a "man in the moon," you'd be able to see him smiling for the camera. :->

I lay awake last night watching the clouds race east across the face of the moon. I'd think it was bright and then the thin cloud layer would have a hole in it and I could see what bright really was. I finally put my glasses on for a focused look and lay there for half an hour as the moon traversed my window. Lovely!

I would have loved to have gotten out cross-country skiing under the full moon last weekend, but only a dusting of snow on the ground where I was. The bright & sunny Saturday would've also been prime. I have snow envy of all of you in Copper Counry.

Didja know, that Keweenaw full moon over the weekend was a Wolf moon!

My Mom, Helen Dolkey (Dorffi) passed away Tuesday Jan 26, 2010. She was born in Allouez, 1918, married Wesley after WWII, lived in Detroit til late 70's, retired to Bumbletown, was in Stillwaters mid 90's, Tapiola Village in Farmington, MI til 2007 then Medilodge Nursing Home til last week. She was a kind, dear soul, I miss her so much.

Taana must have been very lucky -- I didn't see an inch of clear night sky while the moon was full! It's a very nice shot of the full moon.

I'm guessing the lens was around 300mm, maybe 200mm instead.

That was the brightest moon of the year - the wolf moon. I had never heard of it before-it was incredibly large when it was rising and oh, so bright. Gorgeous!

I've always wanted to get a shot of the moon but didn't have the right lens. Until recently. I finally bought a Tamron 28-300mm lens for a horse show photography clinic I'm attending in May in Rapid City, South Dakota. Friday night was so clear early on I decided to give it a shot. I took out my tripod, put the camera on and shot away. Here's the settings I used...

Aperature f/11
Exposure 1/125
ISO 100
I used my two second timer on the camera to get the shot since I don't have a remote release.

This full moon looked big for a reason -- it was closer to earth than usual (perigee moon). It was actually 221,577 miles from Earth and appeared 30% brighter and 14 % larger than any other full moon will be this year. It also rose with a very bright Mars to its left, also at its closest point to Earth. Did anyone see Mars, too? Great photography! When I looked at the Moon photo, it made me think how there are 6 U.S. Flags at different places on the Moon's surface from the 6 manned Moon landings.

That moon provided a lot of light for me for the 4 a.m. feeding of our horses. It was beautiful!

Excellent shot, Taana!! The Moon is one of the hardest objects to capture in a photo. You would think just point the camera up and snap a photo; not so fast, my friend!! There are soooo many variables that have to be accounted for it's not funny, but it is also a challenge and one worth taking, especially if you possess the proper equipment.

So Taana; what type of camera body are you using??

Thanks Capt Paul! I'm just using a Canon XSi right now. Eventually I want to upgrade to a full-frame model but it's not financially feasible right now.

I hear you there, Taana!! Good camera bodies are expensive. I just upgraded from a Nikon N70 to an F6 which set me back a bit, but the photos are like night and day in comparison. And yes, they are film camera bodies, but I'm still old school when it comes to my photographs.......

Isn't there news out today about going back to the Moon?

Going back to the Moon again anytime in the foreseeable future is looking very bleak, as it has apparently been cut from NASA's budget in this new budget monstrosity, even though NASA's budget has been increased overall. And, the development of a new rocket has been cut, as well. Apparently, this administration wants NASA to spend more time on global warm, less on space exploration.
