Especially this time of year, with no leaves for cover here UP North, American Bald Eagles are quite noticeable sitting in a tree, even from a distance. Joseph Hurley spotted one that seems to be surveying the land, most likely looking for something to grab for dinner. That looks like a band on the left leg...you can see it in the first and the third photos. My favorite shot of the three is the middle one, wings spread, branches in the claws and a determined look on the face... like a force to be reckoned with. These creaturess sure give off the essence of strength and freedom. No wonder they're our National Bird here in the USA!

Looks like it was nest building time, maybe the warm interlude caused it to gather branches? I like the way it streamlines itself, especially when hauling a load. That may even be jewelry above its right foot in the first photo.

On PBS this Sunday, they aired a show on Bald Eagles. (The actual show is called NATURE). It was extremely fascinating! I see the eagle has sticks in his talons, must be building up his/her nest. I'm still amazed at how large the nest is--a human could sit in it. Have a good day and thanks for the great "action" photos!!

Deb, I saw the same documentary you did on PBS. It was fascinating. Joseph, the pictures are "awesome"...thank you!

Joseph thanks for the awesome photos.
Here is a great site for live viewing of an eagle who in the near future will be laying her eggs. This is the fourth year that I have watched the process. Starting with the return to the nest, laying of the eggs, hatching and then the new eaglets taking flight. It is a very interesting website.
I just checked out the website and she has laid two eggs already...perhaps a third on the way.

Moments ago Pasty Central recorded a milestone in the history of this project when a regular customer named Evelyn (who is 85 years young) from Spring Hill, Florida ordered a dozen pasties. Here's the way the pasty counter looked before...
...and after her order was placed...
Our thanks to all who have supported this project over the years, while enjoying some delicious U.P. style pasties from up north. To mark the occasion, a $500 donation in Evelyn's name will be made to Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly, one of the non-profit organizations which Pasty Central has helped support locally in Hancock, Michigan.
As Percy Ross used to say "Thanks a Million!", and we hope you will enjoy one with us as we continue shipping the second half of a million pasties throughout the U.S.

Hi On the NATURE show featuring eagles last Sunday, they had a webcam on a newly mated pair. The male was older and had lost his previous mate, and so already had a nest that the "new bride" moved into. It showed that whenever she made a change to the nest, he changed her changes. I guess the concept of "this is MY house that you moved into" crosses species.

We watch the eagles at the Ontonagon county park every summer; several years ago we saw 3 fledgling, but this past summer only 1. Your pictures are awesome!! One summer we watched a young one tear apart a gull, probably caught by the parent!! There are several pair in the Ontonagon area.

Besides being such a magnificent looking creature eagles are a big factor in keeping our rodent population in check.

We had a bald eagle that was keeping an aerie in a tall pine tree next to the lake at our place in da U.P. but have not seen it for the last couple years...The osprey is still there, though...
I am always in awe of these birds when I see them and it's hard to imagine that they were an endangered species at one time...
I remember the last time I went to Alaska and there was so many of them gathered in one place on the beach above Homer...The bald eagles were fighting over the fish that were washing up on shore amongst the vultures, ospreys, golden eagles, and sea gulls...When we go back to the same place this Spring I am gonna try and sneak along the upper ledge this time and get close enough for pictures and video...It was tough to get close trying to walk towards them on the beach itself....

I also saw the show last Sunday about eagles. It was really fascinating. I love the pictures today. It would be such a thrill to get shots like those in person. Great photos, Joseph.
