Shanty town is up and booming on Keweenaw Bay, meaning the ice fishermen (and women) are busy boring holes in the ice, dropping a line down the hole and hauling in their catches. As you can see by today's photos, there are several styles of ice fishing shelters. Some folks chose the constructed square design, others employ the factory made tent style, while a few just bring something along to sit on and enjoy the sunshine of the day.

I love the bottom photo... it comes from a good friend of mine, who along with her husband and young son, were out doing a bit of ice fishing on Chassell Bay. Her little fisherman seems to have his fishing technique down pat and he sure looks to be enjoying the sunshine and fresh air, too. Great family fun!

Does anyone know how the fish are biting so far this season?

Fishing has always been a way of life in the UP. My grandfather would load up his ford and go fishing at Bad Water (back water from a Ford Dam in Dickinson County). He would take the grandsons, but us girls had to wait to eat what they caught. I am so glad that times have changed-Grandfathers taking their grand-daughters out to share with them their favorite past time.

I LOVE fish and could eat it 7 days a week, but NOT that much if that's the only way I could get it!;} brrrrrr

The bottom photo show only about 3" of ice, not a real safe situation this year. We were in Baraga last week, and most of the Bay was open water. If we get strong West winds, much of what ice there is may quickly float out to open Lake areas.

Mary says: The last photo was taken on Chassell Bay, which is more protected than Keweenaw Bay and these folks weren't very far off shore that day.

Speaking of ice fishing...I can't figure out how to give you the direct link, but check this out on youtube. Search for 'crazy canucks ice fishing' when you get there. Too funny. Even though they are Canadians, they sure have a lot of SISU!

Omigosh, that's crazier than the Heikinpäivä Polar Bear Dive, eh?

Oh, and incidentally, this year's Heikinpäivä festival is upon us, with some events already underway, see the schedule here.
