The Lakes won last evening in their game with Baraga. they are now 9 - 2 for the season. Your pictures today bring back many memories of my days growing up in Hubbell. Over the years many of us were a part of the LL-H varsity and were proud to wear the blue and gold.
I was a member of the varsity for all 4 years while in LLH high school and captain for 3 and have many memories going way back to the mid 1940's. My brother Don was one of the captains on the 50's team and remember driving down to Ishpeming on the old, old US-41 with Mr. Learmont to see them getting beat by Bessemer in the U.P. finals by the same 43 to 42 score two years in a row. Thanks for the great pictures today as I have only attended one game at the high school since I left in 1955 and these pictures bring a chill to me today. do you mean in your write up that it is a new gym or a refurbished one as it looks familiar with the balcony etc. they dont build them that way nowdays down here where we live. i submitted a small article 2 days ago about Gordon Barkell when he played at the local school in the mid 1940's.
Mary says: Yes, by new, I mean refurbished, but since the only thing that remains the same are the end balconies (the seating on the one remaining side balcony is different, too), I chose to say "new." Everything else has been changed...
In my senior year 1955 and coached by Mr. Short we won 12 games and lost 6 and 4 of those losses were against Houghton and Mass City and they both went on to win the state championships that year so we played against some good competition. We would journey down to Chassell to practice with them on their small court and they went on to win a state record of 65 in a row after that and they won state championships in 56,57 & 58. In those days we always wondered if we could have gone farther in the tournements if our 4 friends from Tamarack i.e. Don,Dave,Joel,Art (a suburb of Hubbell) that were starters for Dollar Bay would have been on our team.
Again thanks for the memories and good luck to the young boys and cheerleaders that are part of this years team.

Great photos,Mr. G. Yes- Lake Linden-Hubbell is one of those little communities where the people really love and support their young people by keeping their school system up to date. What a wonderful gym and how great to know that there are so many sports and other activities for girls and boys there;helps them become well rounded. GOOOOO LAKES!!!!
