We'll make the Early Bird easy so you can get back to shoveling. What type of blade is being used to trim a beard?

By RD, Iowa (Rdiowa) on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 - 07:56 am:

Hatchet

Technically speaking, a hatchet has a shorter handle

Hopefully a sharp blade.

Might have to get out the dictionary and check out
hatchet and axe to resolve the Early Bird award.

And technically, it would be a double bit axe for felling trees, although I'm not sure about this "close shave"; is that OSHA approved?? ;-)

Good morning! Lots of fun snow pictures this morning!

Today I'm remembering my dad who passed away one year ago. That went by so fast, but it's a day I'll remember my whole life. I still miss him so much!

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 - 08:11 am:

It's a MICHIGAN style axe.

"It must be poor life that achieves freedom from fear." Random thoughts thrive in the current "blizzard" conditions!!

Deb, our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family today!!

By Heikki (Heikki) on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 - 11:08 am:

I still have my father's 4 lb double bit axe from when he was a lumberjack. The reason for the double bit was to have two cutting edges sharpened with different bevels. One ground to an acute angle for felling, the other more blunt for limbing. Hard branches (dead) would sometimes chip the edge of an acute angle blade, causing the air to turn blue near the one using the axe.

Joke: A man takes back a chain saw that he bought and complained because it took him 6 hours to cut down a small tree that should have taken only 1 hour. The store manager took the chain saw in the back room to see if it was working properly.
When he started up the saw, the customer said surprisingly: "What is that loud noise?"

By Tom (Tom) on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 - 11:48 am:

When I was about 10 years old my father gave me my own double-bladed axe. It was a bit smaller than what the men used. I cut a lot of trees with that axe. Those were the days when you cut firewood all summer to be used in the winter.

I noticed all but 1 of the pictures has snow in them. As I write this, all of the webcams from Channel 9 & 10 Cadillac/Sault Ste. Marie have snow, also, thanks to that major snow storm going through Michigan, today:

Deb: I'm thinking of you and your family today. How nice that a
mass was said in your dad's honor. I hope that your mom was well
enough to attend it.

By Matt Karhu (Matt_k) on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 - 05:32 pm:

I have an old hatchet that is made with a single ax blade and a somewhat longer than usual (hatchet) handle. It was made and used by a (now) old man when he lived in Kentucky years ago. It is sharp enough to shave the hair off a deer skin, which he used it for in addition to cutting firewood. It is very useful compared to a standard hatchet.

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 - 07:01 pm:

Since it is an axe, it can't be said he did a hatchet job or be called a hatchet man.

DEB. It is great to have memories. ;O)
