Every fall, the Coast Guard Cutter Alder, makes it's annual trip around Lake Superior, removing the buoys so that they won't get destroyed by the ice that is soon to follow. This year, Mark Rowe was on hand to snap a photo of the boat as it was making its way around Keweenaw Point, headed for the buoy situated out there at the tip of the Keweenaw. Mark was in a very unique position for capturing the Alder, as he and his sons, Nick and Jeremy were just coming up from a dive on the Mesquite, when they spotted her approaching. Note a red and white buoy already up there on the deck of the boat and also Gull Rock Lighthouse off in the distance behind the Alder. The angle this was shot at shows you the space of open water between the lighthouse and Manitou Island, as you can't even see the Island in the photo at all, just the rock outcropping that the lighthouse sits on.

The Gull Rock Lighthouse looks so lonely and forgotten out there.

Manitou is Ojibwa for SPIRIT! That's Spirit Island out there!

7 hours and I'm in the YOOP!!! Hey has anyone used the google maps function called STREET VIEW? Pretty cool. Zoom in on any city using google maps, then use the little yellow "man" figure on the left hand side to VIEW THE STREET. Just click, grab and drag the silhouette of the man to the street to view it. Last night i was playing around and could view my parents house in Bergland and them actually driving by!! Pretty cool to have street view of small towns in the UP. I noticed Eagle Harbor's streets are all viewable on it too. Cool.

Kay, click on the link. Then click on Play Ontonagon. This brings up a new screen. Scroll down to the Play Ontonagon "square" and click on vote. This will bring up another screen where you have to type in 2 words that appear in a box, once you do that, you have voted. The votes are closer than ever so vote every day!

Thanks for getting the Bridge Cam back in operation. I thought they changed the cam position until I realised all the leaves are gone, opening a much more panoramic view.

Robert C. Wetton sent in these two shots, along with the following note:
"Just happened by luck to see the American Courage heading down bound this morning. Wonder if it dropped salt off at Aren's dock??. Boy I remember the days in the late 40's when we would see up to 8 or 10 which had taken refuge in Big Portage due the gales of November. Those were the Good Ole days... RCW"

kay Moore (Mskatie):

Go to the site indicated in Donna's post (above), when there, scroll down the page until you find Play Ontonagon, and just below that click on the link as reads Vote for this Play Day!, which will bring up another page, including a request that you Please type the two words: (in the associated box)§. When you've done that, click on the Vote button, and your vote will be recorded. Come back 24 hours later, and do it all again.

(§ This little trick is intended to prevent automated voting.)
