Fall must be called Fall because of what the leaves do this time of year. For the most part, the leaves here UP North are laying on the ground, unless they've found some unusual places to drop or they're still hanging on. Joyce Tormala has found some of both of those categories. In her first shot, it looks like leaves are on the grilling menu, and they're also going to be the fuel to cook lunch, too. That reminds me of when I was a kid and folks would rake their leaves into a pile and then burn them. That's considered a dangerous practice now-a-days and most towns have ordinances against it, but I kind of miss the smell of burning leaves.

The other two photos from Joyce give us a look at several leaves that are hanging on, withstanding the winds blowing through the branches. Two very different perspectives though. One looking up through the trees and the other looking down at all the leaves that managed to make it to the ground. Hopefully that last one is in the woods, otherwise Joyce will be doing plenty of raking.

Mmmm, leaf barbecue!

Joyce, great job -- I love the lone, fallen leaves that you can find this time of year. Very good photos. :)

Janie T., you took the words right outta my mouth(keyboard). When I saw that the pix were Joyce Tormala's, I thought..."But where's Paco and the kitties?".:(

They all must be just outside of the shot on these. All the leaves are down which is sad but you can see things differently now. Snow tires are on the car now so I'm ready for the winter pictures.

Raking want a bad memory that is. Just got done have about 45 bags full of leaves for the compost man this monday. Next year I burn...lol. Great pictures Joyce I still like to see whats going on in the U.P.

Hi
The township where my mom lives has an ordance against burning leaves, so, we had to mulch with the lawnmower or bag where they were too thick for the mower. [I don't know what my landlord does with the leaves where I rent ;>)]. The Sunday after Halloween mom got a nice surprise: the next-door neighbors and their kids came over and completely cleaned up her front & back yard (mom & I had done some before they came over). All Saints Day indeed.

Great pictures! The second one looks like the leaves are drifting down in mid-air; takes a second to see that they're actually tethered. The last one is beautiful with the shadow of the sapling and the veins backlit. Well done!

Thought all you Pasty buffs would be interested in the 8th picture from the top of the following webpage I came across:

That's a neat site, Thomas. How 'bout those cars? Now that's when cars were cars! We've owned a few of those models over a period of 55 years. Memories.....:)

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Thursday, November 12, 2009 - 07:23 pm:

What a fun site, Thomas. I never knew any of them but brings back good memories of "The Pig" on Capital Dr., "Leons" original custard stand in Milwaukee. And my first pizza at "Pete's Pizza" I think on Fond du lac Ave. about 1955 in Milwaukee. sigh...fleeting youth!

Thomas Baird (Thomas):
Some great memories there!

But further down the page, that "HUT DRIVE-IN CADILLAC" sure looks a lot like the "HUT DRIVE-IN CALUMET" (Kearsarge, really)!

And how many "JOHNSONS" or "JOHNSON'S" restaurants were there really in Copper Harbor?

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Thursday, November 12, 2009 - 08:37 pm:

They actually do show the old Hut in Calumet:

...and folks new to Pasty.com may not know, today this is the home of Pasty Central.

The most important drive in during the fifties and sixties was the Totem Pole in Royal Oak on Woodward ave. Spent most nights cruising thru and looking for girls. Did it in my buddies 1946 fire engine red Hudson. Now the Totem Pole is a Burger King. There are no drive ins on Woodward anymore.

That is a pretty cool web link Thomas. I found a pic on the site of a little ice cream shop here in Commerce Twp... It happens to be the place Andy gave me my promise ring, Aug 24th, on top of the cherry on the ice cream sundae.

No sign of "the Totem Pole in Royal Oak on Woodward ave." in there, but there is the "TOTEM POLE IRONWOOD":

TOTEM POLE IRONWOOD

Gee, this all reminds me of ol' Charlie's Park Inn in San Francisco, where we used to frequently head for breakfast from the Presidio in my old Army days, circa 1965-1968 at 6th Army Headquarters.

No more Charlie's, though, since 1985 it's Mel's Drive In. But I'm afraid "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore", Flo neither!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, November 12, 2009 - 10:56 pm:

There used to be a Totem Pole restaurant between Houghton and Chassell, somewhere near the old Houghton Beach. They served the best hot fudge banana splits that I ever tasted. I was so sad when they closed!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Thursday, November 12, 2009 - 11:18 pm:

We were in the service at the same time FrNash, mine was spent overseas.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Friday, November 13, 2009 - 05:56 am:

Deb--I remember that Totem Pole too. While visiting friends of
the family, all of the teens would WALK there to pick up fries.
That's probably all we had enough money to buy....

The best drive in, though, was the one near Baraga. Many of my
cousins worked at the A & W there as carhops back in the day.
