Now that we're into the month of November, the weather gets more and more unpredictable. As does Lake Superior when the Gales of November arrive. Laurie Bashaw supplies us with some shots of the Big Lake stirred up into a frenzy in Marquette Harbor. When she's whipped into a frenzy like this, you don't want to be out on the water, you're best off making sure both feet are planted firmly on the shore. I just now noticed in Laurie's first photo, that there's someone right near the breakwall, close to the water with a camera set up on a tripod. I sure hope that camera is waterproof! That second photo shows the awesome power that Gitche Gumee can display, with water spraying so high into the air like that. Then in the last shot, you see how much calmer her waters are on the opposite side of the breakwall. It's like the Lake has a "dual personality," with one side being rough and frenzied and the other calm and collected. The many faces of Superior.

I remember how Lake Superior could get at this time of year. I guess we who experienced many gales of November love and respect that mighty lake. Thanks for sharing. I will be home in a few weeks, so I can visit my favorite lake, and see its gales. Have a great day everyone!

I knew those were Laurie's pictures immediately since I'd already seen them. They are great, aren't they?

Oh yes, the Gales of November, I remember them well. There are a few ceremonies this month at River Rouge and Whitefish Point and Dossins Museum Detroit to honor EDMUND FITZGERALD sailors that perished in the 1975 storm on Lake Superior. The Mariners Church services have now been changed to include all sailors that have gone missing in past great lakes storms. my own experiences aboard the FITZGERALD for her maiden season can be read at.
This looks like the breakwater at Grand Marais.

November is the month that we should pray that all the Great Lake sailors return to port safely.

We were in the UP in late September. One day Lady Superior was calm and blue up near Copper Harbor, the next day down near the Porkies she was green and almost as angry as the top pic. In fact The Queen was stuck out on Isle Royale for a couple of days at that time.
