Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Tuesday, September 15, 2009 - 06:38 am:

A number of improvements to the Lakes football field have been made over the summer, one of them being a new scoreboard. From what I hear, it was a necessary upgrade, as the Lakes have scored so many points throughout the years, the numbers were worn right out! :-> Jim Drew happened to be on hand when they took the old scoreboard to haul it away for scrap metal. He said it was cut up, put in a dump truck and away it went.

Then John Gervais was gracious enough to supply us with a photo of the new scoreboard in place, showing the final score of the game the Lakes played against Hurley recently. John also included a shot of the new bleachers and the field house that was replaced in the project. Looks like a few fans were already taking their seats, waiting for the game to begin. The last two shots show the Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes in action, with the Quarterback, #13 (who just happens to be John's son, Brett) running up the field, looking for an opening to pass the ball. And the last shot showing just a minute, 22 seconds left in the ball game. The Lakes are off to a good start for the season with a 3 - 0 record and will be playing at home against the Bessmer Speedboys this coming Saturday afternoon, at 2:00 p.m. GO LAKES!

Thanks for the nice shots of the upgrades to the Lakes field. I was a 1960 grade and we were known as the Whiz Kids.

By Donna (Donna) on Tuesday, September 15, 2009 - 07:01 am:

WOW....what great upgrades!!!

I remember being the Whiz Kids too...

"We are the WHIZ KIDS and no one could be prouder, and if you can't hear us, we'll yell a little louder"....

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Tuesday, September 15, 2009 - 07:08 am:

was the field always by the water?
I was only there a couple of times back in the 60s, but it seems to me that is was in a different place.

By Thomas D. Dessellier (Tomd) on Tuesday, September 15, 2009 - 07:21 am:

The field was located between Lake Linden and Hubbell when I played and was called Bennedict Field. I played from 1956 to 1960. Yes a Whiz Kid and couldn't be prouder.

Our thanks to Jim Drew and John Gervais for the action shots today. Speaking of improvements, John Gervais and the crew at The Hut in Kearsarge have created some great things there this summer (the home of Pasty Central). The walk-up window at The Hut has gotten busy - especially on hot days - serving up the new varieties of ice cream treats. And the improved floor plan in the serving area has brought about more efficiency and even faster service.

I'm sure John is proud of his son's performance on the football ball field, leading the Lakes to victory. And we are proud of John's achievements at The Hut, now in its second year under his leadership. Pasty Central's restoration of this landmark in 2006 was a good kick-off, but when we passed the ball to John Gervais last year, he carried it to the end zone, along with a dedicated team of workers. Amazingly, John also runs another successful restaurant here in the Copper Country - The Waterfront at Ramada Hancock.

By the way, you can catch high school football action at Pasty.NET on the weekends, as we stream games live, courtesy of WMPL and WKMJ.

I wish they were still called the Whiz Kids, Tom. I think that sounds better than the Lakes. Why'd they ever change it? Oh, and I liked Benedict Field too. But next month, weather permitting, I'm going to a football game while I'm UP there. Thanks for the great shots.

By Eddyfitz (Eddyfitz) on Tuesday, September 15, 2009 - 08:12 am:

I played for LL-H in the early 50's and we played in all sorts of weather, and they were all night games under the lights at Bennedict Field between Lake Linden and Hubbell and I believe it also went by the name of CALEDONIA FIELD. The team was known as the Whiz Kids being named after a team in Illinois starting in the mid-40's until it was changed to the LAKES. I always attend every game the LAKES play down here in TROLL land so hoping to see them again this year. I have team pictures and articles in the attic from that era if anyone is interested in getting a copy of same.

Donna, we sang that song so loud, and just kept getting louder!! Oh the fun we had at games!!!

By Laurie B. (Ratherberiding) on Tuesday, September 15, 2009 - 11:27 am:

I was going to say the same thing that Donna did. Boy, did we ever yell that at games. Such fun. I remember we had either t-shirts or sweatshirts with a Whiz Kid on it.

Eddy, would like to see a copy of you as a "young whipper snapper" :>)

By Donna (Donna) on Tuesday, September 15, 2009 - 12:14 pm:

I remember being at a state playoff game in Newberry (on our way to the state championship) and they literally plowed the fields in between the quarters of the game! We sat in layers of clothing and quilts piled up!!! And the snow just kept coming!

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Tuesday, September 15, 2009 - 12:50 pm:

Do any of you remember the little wooden cutout football players with the knitted yarn string, to wear it around your neck? They would have been in the early 70's, since I graduated in 74 and were painted the color of the football uniforms. I think they may have said Whiz Kids on them, too. I had one of those, not sure who made them or how much we paid for them, but I might even still have mine in my cedar chest! I'll have to check! :->

By Eddyfitz (Eddyfitz) on Tuesday, September 15, 2009 - 05:33 pm:

Congratulations to the Lakes for the field improvements and also a great start to the season. Their program has had a ton of success over the years and decades!

Great photos again today. Another exciting accomplishment for the Lakes is a regulation size track around the football field so this coming spring the Lakes track invitational will be in Lake Linden!!!!I am thankful to live in a community that supports its young people by supporting its school system.

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Tuesday, September 15, 2009 - 10:36 pm:

Is that the back of St. Joseph's church in Lake Linden, in that one pic? When I was at LLHS as an 8th or 9th grader ('53 or '54) I was part of a group that cleaned up the field between Lake Linden and Hubbell, and put lime down for the lines. Was just a short walk from there to where I lived, near Antilla's junkyard.

By Justin Johnson (Tinksno) on Tuesday, September 15, 2009 - 10:40 pm:

anyone know what happen or who has the old score board? i would be very interested in buying it for camp.

By Donna (Donna) on Wednesday, September 16, 2009 - 06:01 am:

Mary's post says:

Jim Drew happened to be on hand when they took the old scoreboard to haul it away for scrap metal. He said it was cut up, put in a dump truck and away it went.

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Wednesday, September 16, 2009 - 06:36 am:

What a shame about the old scoreboard! I think they missed their bet by not offering it in an auction to raise money for the school.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Wednesday, September 16, 2009 - 01:00 pm:

Can anyone tell me the name of the company that made the new scoreboard? Just wondering if it is the one I worked for.
