I bet the majority of folks looking at this photo from George Hoyem today, will assume it was taken somewhere in the Pictured Rocks area. But surprise, it's not! This sandstone cliff is actually somewhere on Keweenaw Bay according to George, but he doesn't give specifics as to where exactly. My suspicion is that it's along US-41 between the old Keweenaw Berry Farm south of Chassell, and Carla's Cafe just north of Baraga.

Wow! That's a beautiful picture. I hope George lets out the secret of where this is, so I can put it on my list of places to see next time I make it up to the Keweenaw.

The picture could also be taken of the Eastern Lake Superior shoreline at Jacobsville.

Yes JT, I have seen similar to these along the Traverse Bay-Jacobsville shoreline.

Where ever it is, it's positively beautiful.

J.T. is right. This photo is on the shore near Jacobsville. If you go out the Portage Entry near Jacobsville and stay on the route 41 side for a mile or two, you will see this wonderful sight.

Who cares where it's at, those are some incredible Jacobsville Sandstone outcrops. Talk about a nightmare to map during field geo camp!!

I just got back from being home in the UP. It was great as always. The weather was perfect and Lake Superior was absolutely wonderful. I enjoyed walking in the woods-the leaves are starting to turn. Wish I did not have to come back over the bridge!

I second that last emotion, Joy. Yesterday, as my father and I each
took a last look in our rearview mirrors as Mighty Mac receded
behind us, we were mighty blue. As you said though, the weekend
was perfect. I even managed to catch one freighter going and
another one coming in to the ore dock at Presque Isle. Being in
your favorite place, doing your favorite things, with your favorite
people. It doesn't get any better than that.

Tomorrow is the start of another school year.

Last evening Sept 6, 2009 the 150th Million vehicle was to pass over the Mackinaw Bridge between 7 and 11 P.M.

This is what I love most about the U.P. The geography changes so much as you travel from one end to the other. From the limestone in the east to the sand dunes of Grand Marais to the sandstone of Munising, the iron outcroppings near Marquette and westward. Then there's the Keewenaw, the Presque Isle and the Black Rivers! It never seems to end. When I first saw this photo, I thought it was of the red cliffs just west of the Montreal River.
