As August draws to a close, nearing the end of summer, we take up our end of the month tradition of reflecting upon those that have recently left this world. This month we bring to mind:

Tony Beach
Sylvia Curtin
Britta Malette
Donald K. "Donny" Moyle
Service men and women who have given their all

Please feel free to add the names of friends and loved ones that you'd like to remember. Special thanks to Deb Simons for the beautiful Keweenaw Sunset for today's memorial.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Monday, August 31, 2009 - 05:25 pm:

Hi, Alex.

I first visited McNairy County, Tennessee in 1975 during Spring break, including some of the places where the filming was done. I returned there in 2006, by which time Buford's home was made into a museum, and have talked, via telephone, to their daughter Dwana a few times. The 1st time was in '06, and was going to meet her at the museum, but her multiple sclerosis was acting up and couldn't get out and about. The 2nd and 3rd time was last November, when I called and thanked her when a copy of her autobiography, "Walking On," that I ordered, arrived in the mail. My wife and I had gotten home from the MSU/Purdue football game, and when I told her that, because I called her in the evening, she asked who won, and when I told her MSU, she was gleeful. It turned out that her stepson-in-law, Randall, lived in the Lansing area for a time and he's apparently still a Spartan fan. The 3rd time she wanted me to call her to let her know what I thought of the book, and I left a message on her answering machine, and she called me back. She is a sweet Southern lady.
