De Tour Village is at the extreme eastern tip of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan at the turning point for the shipping channel connecting the St. Mary's River with Lake Huron and the Straits of Mackinac. The location of today's photo is where the ferry crosses to Drummond Island, one of the largest islands in the St. Mary's River.
DeTour was originally named Warrenville in 1848 after Ebenezer Warren, the first postmaster in the township. The name was changed to De Tour on July 25, 1856, when a new postmaster, Henry A. Williams, assumed office. (Wonder why not Williamsville?) De Tour was incorporated as "De Tour Village" in 1961.
The sign in the old photo says in part "Go To The Star. For Genuine Fair Bargains in Clothing, Hats, Caps... Groceries, Provisions... M. Prenzlauer & Son". (Courtesy of U.P. Digitization Center). When I first saw this photo, I wondered what it looks like here today. In this Pasty Cameo Panorama you can turn 360° in front of the De Tour Passage Historical Museum, and see up the hill where the house probably stood. (Courtesy of Google Streets).
I'd be interested to hear if any Pasty Central visitors have been to this spot.
Thanks so much for this picture. I have never seen it before. I'll have to study it awhile to try and figure out what is where, since none of those buildings are still standing.
I live on Drummond Island, so I've looked up that hill many times. Did this picture come from the DeTour Museum? If not, I may print it up and take it in. Someone there may be able to ID some of the buildings.

I took the ferry across in a snowstorm several years ago, and all I saw was heavy driving snow. It was a rough crossing but I am proud to say I took it back the same day. My face was greener than the seas.

I made the trip to Drummond Island a couple of years back. It's a four wheeler's paradise! The trails are like concrete and that includes the ground underneath the puddles!
