It's not often we get to see the man that flies the plane and snaps the shutter for the many aerial photos that have graced our Pasty Cam pages. But today's the day. Susan Harri, Neil's better half, sent this photo of one of the things he does when he's not piloting his plane. That's a King Salmon he's holding, which he caught while fishing in Lake Michigan waters. I didn't get any particulars on the size and weight, so maybe Neil can chime in with the stats for those inquiring minds that want to know.
While Neil was off on one of the other Great Lakes, Brita Haapala captured a "fishing buddies" scene here in the Keweenaw. I can just imagine what a big time this must have been for the littlest fisherman on the dock. Any time a little guy gets to hang out with one of the big guys, it's a special day indeed.

It really is nice to see what the man behind the camera looks like. Very nice fish, too!

My first time fishing, as a kid, I had one of those little fishing things that the line wrapped around a piece of red plastic. My grandpa got it ready for me and I sretched out on my belly on a pier-and then I dropped my line in the water, hook, line and sinker. ;O( right down to the bottom of the water. My grandpa had a couple more of them in his fishing box. ;O)

Neil, it is nice to now have a face to associate all those wonderful aerial shots to. The grand catch of the day...good job.
Brita, it is always a pleasure to view your wonderful shots of those growing boys. I love the look on the smaller fisherman's face. WHAT A JOY.

Nice one Neil, last year I took a King Salmon out of Lake Michigan. It was 14lbs the biggest fish I have ever caught. We were about four miles out of Manistee, it took me 25 minutes to bring it in.

Neils fly over photos really show just what a wonderful place the UP is. I live in Wisconsin, but try to be a "UP-ER" by visiting at least twice a year. Thanks much Neil.

Good eatin'?"
I marinated it overnight in a lemon/herb blend, cooked it on the grill for six minutes each side. Served it a Minnesota long grain wild rice and a vegetable medley. Some of the best tasting fish I have had, nice and flaky.

Thanks for all the comments. The fish were great. I flew to Manistique and my buddy picked me up and drove to Fairport on the Garden peninsula. I caught this one which was about 8-9 lbs and a 16 lb one. The picture got deleted of the bigger one. Believe it or not. Lots of people take their boats there from all over the state. I highly recommend it. I will send Mary some aerials of place. All the other fishermen there seemed very generous with fishing tips and local hot lures are available. I usually never get pictures of myself so I really forgot how I look too. I seem to have grown older by the looks of it.

I've had salmon from Lake Superior and from Lake Michigan. Superior's fish IS Superior! No question!!

Thank you, Mary & Mrs. Harri for showing us the eyes and face behind the camera in the aerial photos that so many of us enjoy so much! It is awesome to finally get to see you, Neil! You are a very handsome guy, and your king salmon is no slouch, either. :-) I caught coho salmon on Lake Michigan once, many, many years ago, on the NW side of the lower peninsula. It made some of the finest eating I have every had, when grilled with garlic butter sauce. :-)

Can we all say what a yummy catch! Neil, how far out off the Garden Penn were you? Did you head out towards Poverty Island? My stomping grounds are Nahma/Isabella and i am an Escanabian.
By E. Neil Harri (Ilmayksi) on Wednesday, August 19, 2009 - 02:13 pm:
We went out from Fairport and run out past Poverty and the other island. Troll back and forth along the dropoff in about 90'-100' of water. We went 55'-60' deep with downriggers and ran lead lines with dipsies. We also had planer boards. They say the salm0n school with same size fish so mark the spot where you hook a bigger one and turn as fast as possible to cross the spot again. It is a slow process with multiple lines out.
