Today's photo from Marsha Galbraith, can be considered by many folks to be the best of both worlds. I'm talking about scenery and ways to de-stress and unwind. When you first look at the photo, the Mackinac Bridge is what grabs your attention, since any view of that architectural wonder is mesmerizing to many. But then you sit back to absorb the rest of the photo and you spot the gentleman wetting his fishing line amongst the weeds and grasses in the waters of Lake Huron or Lake Michigan. I can't quite determine if Marsha was standing on the St. Ignace side of the Bridge or the Mackinaw City side. Anyone?

It's the St. Ignace side, west of the Bridge. I love the "feel" of this shot. Going UP tomorrow! Last minute decision, but I can't wait any longer. Hasn't even been a month since our last trip UP to the Aura Jamboree. Can't believe I stumped Mary!

Seems like we were just there yesterday. I'd have guessed St. Ignace because the Mackinaw side is mostly rocks. Either way, it's an amazing view!

i see a small little bit of an island or land out there on the right of the pic so I'll guess St. Ignace side - no islands or land jutting out like that on the Mackinac City side. But tomorrow on my way over I'll double check - Off to Munising!!!

Marsha, That is a really great shot of the bridge. It's not often that you see pictures of it from that perspective. It's beautiful. Have a wonderful time on your last minute trip. Sometimes those are just the best.

The mighty Mac at its greatest..If you look under the right side of the bridge you can pick out the lighthouse in downtown Machinaw City. (old adage, the fisherman will never give away his location to anyone)

I have never been on the beach on that side. Like the picture, Marsha. Just picked up Taylor in Mackinac on Saturday, half way point for his dad and I to meet. He is happy to be home in the UP.

there are on the UP side. see the watertower of Mackinaw City in the background, good giveaway. Do all of you Yooper Commuters have your bridge card? Have a great week everyone.

Super picture! I just love that bridge and would recommend the yearly Bridgewalk that happens on Labor Day. My hubby and I did this a few years back and it was truly an "ethereal" experience. Wow! This pic would have been taken on the St. Ignace side...we've been in that area.
Cracks me UP how nobody read my post telling where it was! I like the picture because of the contrast between the hustle and bustle of the Bridge and the quiet solitude of the fisherman's location.

I'll be settin my eyes on the bridge the begining of Oct.....I can hardly wait. It has been a few years since I have been able to go home. Mom and dad have pictures of the bridge being assembled....it is a good memory.... May God give each of you a special blessing this week.......

I crossed the Bridge heading south on Thursday and bid the UP farewell again until next time. I took pictures when I headed North, but the picture above is how my minds eye see the Mighty Mac.

As a student coming home from MSU and crossing the Mighty Mac in the 60's I took my wallet out only to realize I did not have enough for the toll. The man at the toll booth had me go over to the building to the right of the toll booths. I offered 2 textbooks as barter till I came back. He smiled and said you weren't going to study anyway were you? Truth be told I said no. Snowmobiling was a welcome diversion from college and being home in Dollar Bay was especially restful. I remember my parents taking me to MSU in 1966 and looking for the Mackinaw bridge and crossing was a beginning of a new life. But I never lost sight of being a Yooper.

At this short distance from the Bridge, the Mackinaw City side would be all buildings and structures along the shore; westward from the Bridge on the St Ignace side is mostly open land such as shown here.

Just there a week ago. Wish I was back there. Ready to get in the car and drive right back up. Got to see Mr & Mrs. Deb and their granddaughter Hayley. It was wonderful to see them again.
By Rachel Schreiner (Mooselover) on Monday, August 10, 2009 - 01:28 pm:
Since Yoopers live "above the bridge", and "trolls" live below, what are the folks who live above the Houghton lift bridge called? They live "above the bridge above the bridge". Is the land north of Houghton called Copper Island (although the island is man-made)? I thought I read that somewhere.

Rachel --
People who live above the lift bridge are called "lucky".

Just crossed the bridge today coming from Lansing& it was a beautiful day to see both sides. Did my good deed & paid for the car behind me. Told the toll booth worker to welcome them to da UP. Heard where someone did that a long time ago & it makes me feel good to do it. There's no place like home da UP.

Cheryl, I too pay for the car behind me every time I cross, I get alot of thumbs up!
