I've been puzzled about today's first picture, ever since I received it from JT in Chicago a month ago. It is the back side of Victoria Dam in the summer of 1971 when it was drained for repairs. In the second shot - from the cover of Keweenaw Video's History of Victoria Hydro - you can clearly see the circular shape of the wall components. But the puzzling part is to compare it to today's flat face of the structure. Somewhere along the line it appears the area in front of the dam was built up with a much thicker barrier. Perhaps someone with knowledge of the construction can enlighten us. Or maybe I should watch the video.

I found an article about the dam. The original arch shaped dam was replaced with thte existing structure in 1991. Google "Victoria Dam" and you will find the article.

There's a typo in the coppercountry.com link that places the construction of the 2nd dam at Victoria in 1903 - it should read 1930. I recall picking up redwood timbers along shore of Lake Superior as a kid (not your typical Lake Superior driftwood) It came from wooden penstock from the dam's pipe that was replaced in 1959, and which had washed down the Ontonagon River.

TRAIN RIDE....I digress here from today's Pasty picture, but wanted to tell you, per the Pasty Net pic of a few days ago, we did take the steam
engine ride around the tracks and trestle in Lake Linden. I recommend this highly to locals and to tourists...the conductor, a former Electrical Engineer grad and teacher from Tech, filled us in on a lot of the local history, much of which we did not know even after growing up here and coming back to retire, as did the delightful ticket seller! You won't be disappointed!

I agree with Helen. The train ride is great and it is a great museum, too. The museum in Calumet, Coppertown U.S.A is also a good one.

I know this is off-topic but just wanted to say Congratulations to John Dee and his wife, Nora, on their newly-arrived bundle from heaven. A little girl named Grace! God bless 'em all! :)
