Yesterday afternoon here in Eagle River there was a lovely memorial service honoring Ernie Niederer. Ernie was an avid supporter of so many local organizations: the Calumet Theatre, Finlandia University, the Sportsmans Club, CLK Rotary, Keweenaw County Historical Society, and many more. In fact, you probably wouldn't be visiting the Pasty Cam today if it weren't for Ernie. In the first few months of this daily feature, Ernie saw our pictures of the Douglass Houghton monument, and heard of its need of repairs. He started a fund raising effort with us to do just that, and much-needed stone work was performed that summer (1998). Eventually Ernie provided backing for the Pasty kitchen and the Internet service (Pasty.net), until the projects could stand on their own.
Looking back in the archives I can only find a couple of glimpses of Ernie - on the deck of the Keweenaw Star and on his return from bird hunting in the Keweenaw woods:

Thanks for everything, Ernie. You were a good neighbor and friend.
Have a good week :o)
