Jarmo: Imagine what has happened in a couple of generations.
My ancestors and some of my living relatives would be able to
read what was in this link. Sadly, this is not my case.

Nevertheless, I was wearing a t-shirt that I purchased at some
long ago Finn Fest at my pilates class today. It has these words
on it :
Finland
Jarvia, Metsia,
Sauna, Poroja
Good words for me. I actually know what they say. (I know some
of them need unlauts) Someone in my class asked me if I was
Finnish and I proudly responded that yes, that is where my
family came from.

Another fine walk down Memory Lane. I do want to say my condolences go out to the Miller family over the loss of their daughter. I hope she didn't suffer, because I would hate to think she was still alive when all hope of getting her out of the mineshaft had to be abandoned. May she rest in Peace.

one, I admit to being confused, You're probably right. I,
undoubtedly mistakenly, thought that would be the way to spell
the kind of hot cereal we ate in the morning when I was a kid. This
is what happens when a second generation person knows what a
word sounds like but has no idea how to spell it. Reindeer makes
more sense--one reindeer is, according to a dictionary I found in
the basement, a poro. Anyone want to weigh in?

My little book says 'purro' = porridge. I remember that word, too. It meant oatmeal or other hot/cooked cereal. How 'bout dat? See yas all at Aura, maybe even get a cup of the bean soup. It's gooood. See you UP there, Marsha.

Are you sure that's not a typo?

Around da farm, "oatmeal/porridge" was clearly puuro/puuroa, and back on da farm, grandma's was pretty "lumpy".

Funny 'ting, I still prefer "lumpy" oatmeal!

Purro would have to be pronounced like burro , but with an initial "P", while with puuro, you should definitely hear the double "u", and of course with the accent on the first syllable.


Oh, looky what I found in the Finnish Wikipedia after entering the above message:

In retrospect, the t-shirt is probably intended to portray Finland along with various of its distinctive icons, not unlike the 1970s TV jingle relating to the USA: "baseball, hot dogs, apple pie and Chevrolet".


P.S.: Oddly enuf, I never liked a pat of butter in my puuro. No milk, either!

In case the "nekkid" puuro seems a bit lacking in sweetness, I have discovered that a dollop of raspberry preserves on top goes a long way toward brightening the experience, adding adequate sweetness and a very compatible flavor as well. (How's that for untraditional, eh?)
