Here we come! On our way UP to enjoy the weekend and make our bean soup (50 gallons) in the big open kettle at the Aura Jamboree (that's north of L'anse on the east side of Keweenaw Bay).

50 Gallons of Bean Soup...Wow! Imagine if we could harness the energy produced from that meal.
The UP could definitely "Go Green".

OOOOuuuuuuu can just feel my feet in the water in that view from Fayette Park. Shocking cold, soothing and bumpy on the bottom. (sigh) ....Pasty take me away...

Jarmo: Imagine what has happened in a couple of generations.
My ancestors and some of my living relatives would be able to
read what was in this link. Sadly, this is not my case.

Nevertheless, I was wearing a t-shirt that I purchased at some
long ago Finn Fest at my pilates class today. It has these words
on it :
Finland
Jarvia, Metsia,
Sauna, Poroja
Good words for me. I actually know what they say. (I know some
of them need unlauts) Someone in my class asked me if I was
Finnish and I proudly responded that yes, that is where my
family came from.

Another fine walk down Memory Lane. I do want to say my condolences go out to the Miller family over the loss of their daughter. I hope she didn't suffer, because I would hate to think she was still alive when all hope of getting her out of the mineshaft had to be abandoned. May she rest in Peace.

FRNash: We're both right about the first three, but about the last
one, I admit to being confused, You're probably right. I,
undoubtedly mistakenly, thought that would be the way to spell
the kind of hot cereal we ate in the morning when I was a kid. This
is what happens when a second generation person knows what a
word sounds like but has no idea how to spell it. Reindeer makes
more sense--one reindeer is, according to a dictionary I found in
the basement, a poro. Anyone want to weigh in?

I would go with the hot cereal...it sounds like what was said around our breakfast table.

...oh, and that poroja had some butter in the middle and some brown sugar and a milk moat.

My little book says 'purro' = porridge. I remember that word, too. It meant oatmeal or other hot/cooked cereal. How 'bout dat? See yas all at Aura, maybe even get a cup of the bean soup. It's gooood. See you UP there, Marsha.

Are you sure that's not a typo?

Around da farm, "oatmeal/porridge" was clearly puuro/puuroa, and back on da farm, grandma's was pretty "lumpy".

Funny 'ting, I still prefer "lumpy" oatmeal!

Purro would have to be pronounced like burro , but with an initial "P", while with puuro, you should definitely hear the double "u", and of course with the accent on the first syllable.

Beautiful, FR. Like the rest of you, we always put a pat of butter on
our puuro. By the way, I had a good look at my t-shirt with the
Finnish words. It has a set of reindeer antlers on it. That probably
should have been a hint for me, eh?

In retrospect, the t-shirt is probably intended to portray Finland along with various of its distinctive icons, not unlike the 1970s TV jingle relating to the USA: "baseball, hot dogs, apple pie and Chevrolet".

Well, maybe I'll give the jam a try this summer on my Maltex.
