Black flies tend to be worse in May, June, and July. You'll find more of them near rivers and streams because their larvae live in running water. However, they seem capable of appearing almost enywhere, even miles from running water. If you're planning a summer trip, August can be a decent bet, especially during a dry year. But, caveat lector: These aggressive little beasties have stripped me to a skeleton even in September.
Just be sure to bring lots of bug repellent, including at least one kind that relies on something other than DEET, because some black fly species don't give a hoot about DEET. If you can stand to wear one, those bug nets that cover your head and neck seem to work pretty well...just look for one with fine mesh.

Those blackflies always get me around my ankles. one bit me on the back of my arm and drew blood, still have a bump where it bit me. ;O(
When my mom was alive and living in Lake Linden, Bill and I use to take rides and I would take movies for my mom to watch. One place we stopped, the flies got so bad, but, I did not want to stop filming and there were quite a few cuss words at those flies. She just looked at me as if to say, 'better you than me'.
