Greg Burk was recently in the city of Negaunee and sent me these two shots of Teal Lake. I've always thought it was such a pretty little lake to welcome you to their city. The rocky hill across the lake reminds me just a little of the contours you find along the shores of Lake Superior, especially at Isle Royale. I'm not sure if this still holds true, but at one time this lake was designated as a "No Motors" lake, as I believe it was the water supply for the city of Negaunee. Maybe someone from around those parts can help me out here and let us know if that is still the case here and now. One thing for sure, it looks like a great place to launch your kayak (or canoe) and paddle around for a few hours.

This from the City of Negaunee's Police Department website concerning gas-powered motor usage on Teal Lake:

GAS-POWERED MOTORS ON TEAL LAKE:
Per city ordinance, gas-powered motors are prohibited on Teal Lake regardless of whether they are being operated or are simply attached to a boat (not in use). You must detach any gas-powered motor from your watercraft before launching onto Teal Lake. Questions concerning this ordinance should be directed to the Chief of Police at (906)475-4154.

However, I do not believe the city gets its water from Teal Lake anymore......

any pictures of the freighter AMERICAN COURAGE that travelled the Portage over the weekend from Duluth to Marquette..She is to load there and proceed to Toledo and back to Superior, Wi..

Mary says: Stay tuned for later in the week...we'll feature several shots of her coming into the Portage Canal.

I'm not from around these parts so...a question: did Teal Lake get its name from its color? Beautiful blue!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Monday, June 15, 2009 - 08:10 am:

I have always loved Teal Lake, as we drove past, on the way to da Tech! It is a gorgeous little lake! The question in my mind now is that I could have sworn that I saw a slalom water skiing course and a ski jump in the lake, in the last 5 or 6 years? Those would not be possible without gas powered motors, unless an exception were made for those. Maybe I confused that part with another of the pretty small lakes UP there?

I always wondered why Teal Lake was so under-developed, residentially speaking. Perhaps because of the ordinances and the fact that there is so much rock foundation around the lake.

I too love seeing Teal lake as I drive past -- a beautiful color, and always calm and quiet. It looks like a perfect place to go for a swim or a kayak.

Marianne........maybe there is a special family or civic group who are VERY fast rowers. And make their living pulling water skiers????????? :O>)

Marianne - I bet you're thinking of the lake on US 45 between Land O Lakes and Eagle River WI near Sugar Camp. I can't remember the name of the lake but it's a small, pretty lake and has a ski jump as you described.

By Steve Haagen (Radsrh) on Monday, June 15, 2009 - 10:52 am:

Lake Pleasant is north of Conover and south of Land O Lakes, home of the Chain Skimmers water ski show and is owned by them.

Not sure when, but every year Teal Lake hosts a public swim, in which you swim from one end to the other. I always think about doing it, but never fit it into my schedule!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Monday, June 15, 2009 - 12:08 pm:

Pjgrill - We have never been that way, at least since our sons were born (25 years ago), so that's not it, but thanks for thinking of us. We come from the lower peninsula, so probably would have been near Marquette, or either on M-28 or US 2 or US 41. I really think it was Teal Lake, to be honest, but it might have been a similar lake near there?

Is this the lake with the little ice cream parlor on the shore? We stopped there a few years ago on our way to the Keweenaw and enjoyed it so much we still talk about it.

I have a niece that fell off of Teal Lake Bluff when she was just a teen. Broke her up a bit, but she is a fine lady now. God Bless. I'm talking many yr. ago.

When my family and I were going up to MTU to visit the campus just before my senior year of high school (Summer of '93) our car broke down just as were coming over the hill above the lake. We were able to coast into the parking lot of the ice cream shop, Pier Delights if I remember correctly. My mom, sister and I got ice cream while my dad made repairs to the car. I also tried to chat it up with the girl working the counter, who was very cute, and whose name I have forgotten over time. :( Ah, memories
