Today's photos may spark a few memories for those of you that were Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts or Camp Fire Girls, back in the day. The fisherman is Taylor, Brooke Gubacz's son and he's enjoying a Cub Scout camp out at one of the Scout's family farm. The Girl Scouts were involved also and Brooke told me that they even had it set up so the kids could do some geocaching, making it a fun event for all involved.

According to Brooke this yummy looking fish dinner in the second photo wasn't caught by her son, Taylor, but another Scout, named William. Seeing it all together with vegetables in that foil, reminded me of when I was a Camp Fire Girl and we went to Day Camp where we learned how to make bush pasties wrapped in foil. The details are a little foggy, but we dug a hole in the ground, lined it with foil and added charcoal. I think we then covered them with more foil and buried them in the hole with sand, cooking our "pasties" right there in the ground. We still make bush pasties now, whenever we're camping on our boat, only we skip the hole digging and just cook the foil wrapped dinner on the grill. Good to see that today's youngsters are still experiencing outdoor activities like this.

As long as we're talking about pasties, it's a good time to remind you to order your delicious U.P. Pasties, from Pasty Central. They'll be delivered right to your door and you won't have to cook supper that day! There's still time to order them as a Father's Day treat, too. Be sure to get your order in before the hot weather arrives and the Pasty shipments are suspended for the summer.

LATE ADDITION: Here's another gift idea for Dad on Father's Day...we have a new sponsor, Barb Simila and her webpage: BigLakeGallery.com. A visit there will give you a good selection of "Fine Art Prints with poetry" and much more to choose from.
Pasties and Pictures for Father's Day, a great combination! Don't wait too long, Dad's big day is just around the corner.

I do not like fish, but that fish dinner put together in foil looks good.;O)

I remember all the times going fishing with my grandpa and uncle and my cleaning and filleting the fish- only they fried their fish in a cast iron skillet and my grandpa and I would go down by the water and wash the pan with sand and rinse it in the water. love those memories.

I don't remember our Scout meals looking that good. Did anyone ever eat boiled Skunk Cabbage?

By D. Clark (Dcclark) on Thursday, June 11, 2009 - 08:21 am:

It's an extremely foggy morning here in Houghton -- I can't even see the lift bridge, just a few blocks away (and Hancock is totally invisible -- are you guys OK?? ;).

The fish dinner looks good but cut the heads off. I don't like to eat anything that's looking back at me while I'm eating it

When I was a camper at Camp Michigamme (MMI), we called them Hobo pasties. Meat & potatoes wrapped in foil and place on hot coals. Next best thing to Ma Toolys meals in Grace Hall.

We talked about pasties a lot yesterday on the drive UP here. However, bush pasties are not for me. Give me crust!!!!!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, June 11, 2009 - 09:31 am:

Oh yeah, when we were driving through Northern Wisconsin, we saw a sign that read "10 different kinds of pasties". What the heck is that about, lol????? Then they're not real pasties.

By Dunerat (Dunerat) on Thursday, June 11, 2009 - 09:32 am:

Fish in foil, yay! Always worth a little campfire smoke in your eyes. So, Brooke, were those brook trout?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, June 11, 2009 - 09:33 am:

OOPS! It'll teach me to read the message BEFORE posting. I took one look and thought they were having bush pasties. Now I see they're fish. In that case, yum, yum!!!!!

By Gus LL (Gusll) on Thursday, June 11, 2009 - 10:22 am:

Looks like brook trout ,yukon gold potatoes, onion, carrots. Done that many times, very good. Food always seems to taste better cooked out on an open fire.

Never heard of bush pastys, but we make foil wrapped meals on our grill all the time. Meat potatoes, onion, carrots salt and pepper and butter to taste and throw them on the grill for about 1/2 hr. Good eating. God Bless
