Good morning UP! Charlie, may I ask what beach is in the photo? Yesterday, I was talking to a few people from out East about how beautiful the UP is. Hopefully I will be able to convince them to go to the UP. So many people think that if they have gone to the Soo, they have seen the whole UP. Question I have is what is everyone's favorite spot in the UP? I have so many people here at work asking me what mine is, but yet I would like to have them see more then my favorite spots! Thanks for sharing!

By JAD, Oscar, MI (Jandalq) on Friday, May 1, 2009 - 09:19 am:

Mine is McLain Park--lighthouse, beach, sand, rock, White Pine, Birch, hiking, biking, and skiing trails--it's the "best deal" around. Michiganders--support your State Parks!

I believe "Happy May Day" wishes are in order! TGIF!

Joy, that beach is unmistakable the old Calumet Waterworks, one of my favorite U.P. spots. There's the old dock with the broken end pointed downwards. My grandfather actually worked at the Calumet Waterworks Co., the old blue building before it was torn down, and lived just across the street from it. Many years ago.

Everything about the U.P. is great. ;O)

For me as a geologist, anything west of a Marquette/Rapid River line is simply incredible. There are just way too many spots to list here. I guess I would add Pictured Rocks in there as well, despite everything south of there is muskeg around Seney.

Joy - Favorite Spots:

Tahquamenon Falls (Especially Upper)

Picture Rocks – Boat Tour

M-26 drive from Eagle River to Cooper Harbor (my personal favorite)

Lake of the Clouds - Porcupine Mountains

…and all of the lesser-traveled forest sanctuaries in-between.

By Sharon I. Smith (Sharons) on Friday, May 1, 2009 - 11:11 am:

Hey, Alex! Thats COPPER Harbor, please...my favorite spot in the whole world, not just the UP (of course!)!
What's great about it here is that it's a central point for so many other great spots, from High Rock Bay to Great Sand Bay, Brockway Mountain, the Estivant Pines, and so on and on.

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Friday, May 1, 2009 - 12:16 pm:

Mine is the Keweenaw, and any where North of the Might Mac I guess! Like the Captain sez, too many to list.

By Joy Brewer (Joy) on Friday, May 1, 2009 - 12:49 pm:

Jad, you will be glad to hear that there are two bills in both houses of the Michigan Legislature that will provide more funding for our state parks. Our beautiful McLain State Park would get the much needed money to make improvements to correct its erosion problem.

Alex, you have listed my favorites. I have a UP picture gallery (my main hallway to bedrooms) of the spots you have mention. When I have guests, I find them lingering in that hallway admiring our absolutely fabulous "homeland"- the UP.

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Friday, May 1, 2009 - 02:28 pm:

Alex those are my favorite plus that little wayside park that was on here the other day...Tioga River? That's when I know I'm closing in on the best of the UP.

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Friday, May 1, 2009 - 02:29 pm:

Also...when that picture of Edie and Buddy is on, I know it's spring.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Friday, May 1, 2009 - 05:42 pm:

Thanks 4 more Memory Lane pics as usual. Ran across this cool website, and this 1 page has old postcards of Michigan tourist attractions, some of them from the U.P. and even a few from the Keweenaw and vicinity. Enjoy.

The hike down to the Sturgeon River Gorge is great for the outdoor lover. I also love to stop at the rustic wayside on the shore of the Big Lake just outside of Munising heading west on 28. Calgon....take me there.
