On Friday Jonathan and I had the opportunity to stop by the Michigan Iron Industry Museum just east of Negaunee. In all the years we have lived in this area, I am the only one in our family who had never been to the museum. What a fantastic collection of history about the Iron Industry! It is in a rather out-of-the way location, on Forge Road along the Carp River next to a large cemetery. It's about to become much more easily accessible this summer, as a scenic drive is being carved out from the museum to U.S. 41, as you can see in the bottom photo.

It just so happens today from 12:30 to 4pm is the Open House at the museum, with special tours and music by the group "White Water" from 1-2:30pm. Edie and I are heading over, about a 2 hour drive from the Copper Country. When I get some time, I'd like to put together a Pasty Cameo about the beginnings of Michigan's Iron Industry, which occurred near Teal Lake in the 1840's. Today we'll do a little research at the site of the Carp River Forge.

By the way, I lost my list of photographers for today's pictures. Perhaps you could help me identify these, if one happens to by yours from a Guest Gallery album. Thanks to all who contribute to this ever-growing database of visual history of the U.P.

Have a good week :o)

The third photo looks like it came from this website: http://hunts-upguide.com/negaunee_michigan_iron_industry_museum.html

Is the road to the museum paved? I am thinking about going there on the Wing. It looks like an interesting place and a very nice area.

Once again...thanks for the travel info.

Forge Road is paved, but the scenic drive to 41 will not be completed until later this year.

Alex, The new road off of US Hwy 41 is being finished this spring and will be paved. The old entry road from County Road 492 is paved and can be used to get to the Museum parking lot and building.

"Soo Locks webcam …"

This information was posted just yesterday on johndee.com ASK John: SAULT STE. MARIE WEB CAMS:

Quote:

"This was on the saultboatwatching.blog

As you may have noticed, the Soo Locks web cams are not operating. I asked my helpful sister-in-law at the Sault Visitors and Convention Bureau what was going on. This is what she said,

"Now the Soo Locks webcam has had a upgrade and when they do that they have to wait until the government gives them permission and we know how long it takes the government to do anything all I can say is I keep calling Detroit Army Corp (sic) and get the same answer." "
