Hang in there Joanne, I smoked for 45 years and it is so great to be able to taste food again and not afraid to go to church because your going to cough all the time. It has been 10 years for me and I know it is a rough road, I just said one day I am done and that was it. Good Luck!!!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, April 2, 2009 - 10:37 am:

Hi. Since Clark Mine Trail is near Estivant Pines and Lake Manganese, it stands to reason that the mine is in the vicinity of Lake Manganese and the Estivant Pines.

By Steve Haagen (Radsrh) on Thursday, April 2, 2009 - 02:36 pm:

Still no early bird? will this be the only day with no winner??

By Steve Haagen (Radsrh) on Thursday, April 2, 2009 - 02:38 pm:

Ref.: Rocks & Min.: 21:664; 58:111 & 182, U.S.G.S. PP144, "Copper Mines of Keweenaw", by Clarke.

An underground copper mine consisting of eight shafts and three adits located southeast of Copper Harbour. The Clark Mining Company was organized in 1853 and worked a small vein of copper. Work was suspended in 1854 and in 1855, the Societe Francoise des Mines des Cuivres Natif du Lac Superior purchased the property. In 1857, the property was again sold to the French Copper Mining Co. and was combined with the Bell Mining Co. Work was sporadic or done under tribute until 1901, when all work ceased. In 1942, the property was deeded to the Calumet & Hecla Consolidated Mining Co.
The mine piles at Clark yield very fine specimens of datolite, prehnite, cuprite, and analcime. The East Vein, about 1 mile north of Clark Mine proper, has also been a favorite for datolite and prehnite.

Good photos.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Thursday, April 2, 2009 - 04:42 pm:

Joanne...Good Luck to you! One can never feel guilty for taking better care for their health! Besides if you ever witnessed a smoker cough up blood, along with bits and pieces of their lungs, such I have when I worked for one of our hospitals here, that would scare anyone into seriously stopping smoking!

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Thursday, April 2, 2009 - 06:24 pm:

Joanne--What a great thing to do for YOU! Keep it up...one day at a time. You can do this. You should be very proud of yourself. We're all pullin' for you!!

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Thursday, April 2, 2009 - 06:49 pm:

Way to go Joanne! I've heard, spearmint gum and m&m's help too! Keep it U.P. You can do it! Good Luck!

Thank you for all your positive thoughts. This is by far one of the hardest things I have had to do,but with all your support I can do this.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Thursday, April 2, 2009 - 09:20 pm:

Hey Steve, thanks for using my info from MinDat to describe the Clark Mine and its history, since I'm the one that wrote it for them. ;-)

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Thursday, April 2, 2009 - 09:36 pm:

I think the Anti Smoking add on tv with that young lad crying for his Mother is over the edge, as are some others. They say after 3 day's it gets easier, and it was for me. I never was a heavy smoker, but a smoker none the lest of 12 to 15 a day. I went 3 months, and did feel better. For some people there poison is chocolate or potato chip's. Good Luck Quitting Joanne! My son and daughter-in-law did it. The price for a carton of my brand was $ 26.00 and a single pack was $ 3.05 out the door. My carton with the recent price increase will be $4.00 more, an 52 cent's more a pack.

Where the heck is Clark Mine. Is it in photo's only? Is it in the Village Of Clark, where you can take the last train to Clarkville?

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Thursday, April 2, 2009 - 10:41 pm:

Hei Joanne S. I quit a long time ago. Summer of 1970. But, it took me three times to get it done. Keep on quitting! Mimi and I will be praying for your success.
