After this latest barrage of snow here in the Copper Country and surrounding areas, I'm thinking that this snowman and Yard Sale sign is pretty much the sentiment of most of us Yoopers right about now. This clever capture comes from Dave Dalquist, via his Mom, Jan. I think we're ALL getting a bit tired of it this time of year. The differences in the amount of snow this storm dumped on us, is amazing, varying from NONE on the ground in Lake Linden, to 8 to 10 inches in Houghton, to 21 inches up at the Keweenaw Academy. With only a few miles in between these areas, that sure was quite a variation in amounts of accumulated snow on the ground. I'm just glad I live in the area that received NONE!

The remaining photos today, come from E. Neil Harri, who snapped them before this deluge of snow arrived. He figures this is a boar bear, since it's by itself and without cubs. This is the time of year when their coats are the nicest, since they're just waking up from a long winter nap. With all the snow we received, I wonder if this guy is thinking twice about whether he woke up a bit too early this year!

Don't forget to check out Neil's webpage if you're looking for a unique gift for Mom on Mother's Day. Then complete your Mom's gift by ordering Pasties for dinner and giving her a break in the kitchen :o)

If you feel left out Mary, I have a pretty good load of snow already to go in the back of my truck.

Mary says: That's OK, Art, no need for any deliveries! Actually, I was working up in Houghton the day of the storm, so my Ranger pickup has a good load in the back, too! :->

Oooooooooohhhh, I love the bear pictures. There's just something about catching a glimpse of them out in the wild.

I'll have to check out Neil's page. Remind me tonight, lol.

Nice photos! It's nice that Neal can look down for photo opportunities like these and not have to worry about rush hour traffic.

The conehead snowman is quite something! Great bear pictures!

ALL, wonderful pics, thank you! We need some humor right now and the aerials of the bear are super! Hancock was hit hard by the latest storm; it was amazing when we drove to Lake Linden yesterday, NO snow.
What a difference 10 miles can make, actually less as Dollar Bay didn't look as though they had what we got. Heikki Lunta, the Finnish snow god, just loves our area, I think.

I just received this great shot along with a note from Ginny Jamison, president of Keweenaw County Historical Society:

skater
"This is the bronze statue of a young skater in Cheryl's garden in front of the SDC at MTU. The statute, part of a memorial to Cheryl DePuydt who started the Portage Lake FSC, the Copper Country Skating Academy and was an inspiration to many area figure skaters, will be dedicated on Mother's Day. Will the garden be blooming by then?" - - Virginia Jamison

Mary is rubbing it in a little I think. Since a 4wd truck was stuck in my driveway yesterday Lake Linden did have it easier.

Mary says: OK, I'll admit it. I was rubbing it in just a little! :->
It's still pretty amazing to me though, that there was THAT much snow that had fallen and it missed us in Lake Linden. I'm not complaining...

Love Neils pictures as always.

Virginia -- Cheryl did start the Skating Academy but she came to Houghton many years after the Portage Lake Figure Skating Club had been in existence. I was president of PLFSC in the late 1960's when the club had only 2 hours a week ice-time at Dee Stadium. During that period I introduced the club to Robert Ogilvie's basic skating skill testing program. We were also using Wild's power skating to use with the young boys. John MacInnes told us as long as we were teaching skating he would guarantee us ice time. The club had been in existence many years before I got involved. I have programs from ice shows we put on during the late 60's and early 70's. It wasn't until the SDC was built that Cheryl was hired at Tech and became active in the club. I donated my copy of Ogilvie to the Portage Lake Library. The statue is lovely and a fitting tribute.

I would love to find a house with a garage in Lake Linden to rent.

Mary says: How about one to buy? :->

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Thursday, April 23, 2009 - 03:20 pm:

It has been sold, but John Dee's home in Lake Linden was a nice ranch home w/garage to been able to buy.

"Has John Dee left the UP?"

Nope, just moved from Lake Linden to Allouez Township in Keweenaw County.

See John Dee's home page.
