We've seen the Ice Breaker Mackinaw on the Pasty Cam before, but I don't recall seeing it so close to the spot where the Pasty Cam is published each morning. This particular shot near Eagle Harbor from Neil Harri happened to be taken a year before the name "pasty.com" came into being, back in the mid-90's. I bet if we had been looking out the window here in Eagle River that day, we might have seen it bust its way through the ice, getting ready for the shipping season.

Thanks also to Don for helping to bring Pasty Central's Day in History, which today tells about a time when Great Lake levels were so low that Niagra Falls ran dry! I don't think wer're in danger of that happening again any time soon.

Jim Boggio called me about the ice breaker off Eagle Harbor that day.It was making slow headway in heavy ice. That was before I moved to the harbor full time.
The Mackinaw had to back up and ram the ice many times to get through, It was a year when ice was across the big lake.
I need to reprint these rolls of film and rescan them at higher resolution.

I loved that ship! But heartbroken when they painted 'her' red....and even more heartbroken when 'she' was decommissioned. Beautiful photo, Neil!

The original USCG Mackinaw saw a lot of duty. I'm very proud of the U.S. Coast Guard. My favorite branch of the U.S. Armed Forces.
