The winds here in the Copper Country were once again howling and blowing during the storm we had earlier this week. That always makes the snow appear to be falling vertically, rather than a horizontal float from the skies, as is the norm. I found a good example in Susan Hooker's album, when she was skiing on the Michigan Tech Trails. I'm assuming that giant snowbank was formed from the blowing and drifting throughout this snowy and windy winter we're having. Sure makes for a good wind block when you're gliding parallel along the base of that steep bank.

Looks like the cold weather is finally starting to break. The temperature trend in Michigan is looking good with temps moving into the 40's - 60's and it's moving north.

I am looking forward to seeing some great UP river and waterfall photos by you shutterbugs when all of that snow begins to melt (hint-hint)...and you know we appreciate it.

Mary, don't you mean the wind makes the snow appear to fall horizontally rather than vertically? Here by the lake on occasion I've called my wife to the window and pointed out falling snow to show her it does actually fall vertically instead of the usual horizontal wind blown stuff. Normally here it kind of reminds me of the old starfield screensavers as it flows toward and around the house.

Its been a long cold winter!

Never saw a snow drift so high. At least up in the UP you have winters like my dad use to tell about here in Northern Indiana. Today the sun is shinning and the birds are singing. Spring is coming your way.

Just how much snow has there been this year? Looking at the snow thermometer, can't really tell what this year's depths have been ;o(

I'm hoping to have one more weekend of snowshoeing before the big melt gets started... I think it may be for real this time. The rest of the week looks like it's going to be pretty warm!

It's amazing how the skiiers in the photo are dwarfed by the huge bank. I looked at the photo this morning and said "hey, I know that place..." -- that snowbank on the Tech Trails caught my eye a month or two ago as well. (Mine is here and here, too!)

Excuse me but if snow falls straight down that is verical. Something blowing across, that is horizontal. Think of the horizon. Most snow falls down vertically. Blowing snow may come across horizontally. Since everyone seems to agree with Mary, I can only assume that the U.P. is upside down.

When the snow falls at a 45 deg. angle shall we call it horizvertical?

Back and forth, up and down are the terms I use. So I hope this rain we are having keeps up, so it don't come down.

The official snowfall total for Keweenaw County is 266.7" and Houghton County is at 251.5"; both have 30" on the ground. These totals may be significantly more or less in different parts of the area.

Yes everyone, horizontal is side to side (as in the horizon) and vertical is up and down. See, it's not only Charlie that can be tricky, only catching this one didn't get anyone an award! ;->
