Can you name a state, a village and a bank that appeared in writing on separate days (Feb 6th) in the past 10 years?

By Steve Haagen (Radsrh) on Friday, February 6, 2009 - 08:14 am:

River Valley , Florida, eagle harbor
First Post
There was also Laurium, on the fireman's jacket

By Steve Haagen (Radsrh) on Friday, February 6, 2009 - 08:23 am:

Yes there was I just noticed that ;)

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, February 6, 2009 - 08:33 am:

Love the Florida sign. I've always wanted to do something like that to send to friends.

Good morning and have a great weekend. TGIF!!!

Where is everybody? Takes a little of the fun out of it when there are no other posts.

My mom lived in Florida as a kid. It was on Wolverine Street. My mom always called it 'Florida Location.' Her moms parents lived upstairs of the house. She told me a few times, after her parents would take her to school, kindergarten, she would walk in one door and out another door and go home to spend time with her grandma. She said she had fun with her grandma. ;O)

If the Florida sign is for a village or town, where is it located? Anyone know how it got its name?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, February 6, 2009 - 09:04 am:

The Florida sign is right at the top of "The Calumet Hill" (I'm from Lake Linden, therefore it's called the Calumet Hill). And we always called it Florida Location also.

Good Morning everyone!!

Last month (13th) Someone ask the question about a auto racetrack between Laurium and Lake Linden. Was that track name ever found??

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Friday, February 6, 2009 - 09:46 am:

How 'bout M-26.

By FJL (Langoman) on Friday, February 6, 2009 - 10:36 am:

For a true cheese cake you use "bakers cheese", not cream cheese.....A great dessert after a "Pasty central" pasty.........FJL

Is the forida sign still there? I have never noticed it and it would be only blocks from my place and I know where Florida Location is.

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Friday, February 6, 2009 - 02:39 pm:

The "Florida" road sign has always been a mystery to me as well, vs. "Florida Location".

Florida Location seems to refer to what otherwise might be considered the "south end" of Laurium, but in fact immediately south of the village limits, or roughly just south of Dave's Auto Service, and barely 80 acres in all. No?

On the other hand, as I recall, the only Florida road sign is well down the road (M26) toward Lake Linden, virtually in the middle of nowhere, close to the former Douglass Houghton Falls access point; by the Tikkanen Road corner, perhaps? Would that be at the top of "The Calumet Hill", Deb?

I can't help myself, a minor correction for today's Cam Notes page:
"These photos today were taken in the … Menomonee area."
That would be the Menominee area.

Mary says: That's what happens when I'm writing my notes at 1:00 in the morning. I guess I must have needed "mo" sleep! It's fixed now, so you can rest easier... :->

Good pics. I like the fireworks 1, also. 1 question: Is Florida an unincorporated Michigan community. I did the Lake Superior Circle Tour in 2005 and don't recall c-ing that sign.

The only Florida sign I ever saw was sorta kitty-corner across from Alice Grose's house in the south-end of Laurium. The old Florida Hall was turned into a Jehovah's Witness Kingdom Hall when I was a kid.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, February 6, 2009 - 10:42 pm:

I learned something today, with all of this discussion of the Florida sign(s). Before today, the only Florida sign that I had ever seen before UP there was in Copper Harbor, the sign and mileage marker pointing the way to US 41, talking about all the way south to Florida. :-)
