Just about a week ago, Clarissa Gaff was heading down Quincy St. in Hancock, when she spotted a huge pile of snow reaching right up to the roof of the Superior National Bank building (a long-time Pasty Central sponsor). Luckily Clarissa had her camera with her and snapped the shot we have here today. She said there was a crew of about 10 up there clearing the roof. Now, that's a huge pile of snow and my thought looking at it is... how on earth did they move that snow pile once it was on the ground? I also wonder if anyone took the easy way off the roof by sliding down the snow pile, rather than using the red ladder leaning up to the building. Looks like it would have been quite the ride! :->

That's one heck of alot of snow! Wow! I was thinking a slide down that pile would have been tempting too!

SHEESH!!! That's a lot of snow!

It's a good time to clear the roof, since we've been getting so little snow lately. To me, it looks like the bank is building pillars to fortify its entrance!

...and I complain about having to clear the driveway:)

Is that a Christmas tree in the middle of the roof?
Don't leave home without your camera. You just never know when a good shot will appear.

There is a second mountain of snow on the opposite side of the one. Within minutes a skid loader and a dump truck could make them disappear.

My first thought looking at it is
Why build a flat top building in da UP?!

By D. Clark (Dcclark) on Tuesday, February 24, 2009 - 09:02 am:

Becca -- I don't know, but I see a lot of flat-topped buildings around Houghton. It looks like a standard construction method, so it probably saves a lot of money -- then you just hire somebody to go clean it for you every now and then...

There is an old saying about flat roofs: "They ALL leak". I guess it means job security for roofers...

Hi
An interesting contrast to Monday's pictures of pristine snow, blue skies and winter solitude.

It looks like some of the snow in today's picture is mixed with sand, I assume applied by the road crews. I used to live in the Kalamazoo area and once a winter would take a trip over to South Haven to look at the shore ice. There would be the big ice mounds near shore formed by waves, but some sand would blow and coat the surface. I recall a little boy asking his dad why did they put those big mounds of sand by the shore.

I'm so glad I don't have to shovel my roof, there is enough other stuff to shovel and the banks are too high as it is.

How recent was this photo taken? I'm curious because there's still Christmas Spirit around with the Christmas Wreaths and Christmas Tree behind the building still in place.

Mary says: The person who sent this picture in to us, said it was taken 10 days ago, actually on Valentine's Day. Perhaps with all the snow we've been getting they haven't had a free moment from snow removal to take down the Christmas decorations up high! :->
