The Michigan Tech Winter Carnival festivities are coming to an end for this year, according to the Schedule of Events. Snow statues can be spotted all over the campus, like these snapped by Daryl Laitila. She was out and about today, snapping shots of the various statues and captured some close-ups of the more detailed craftsmanship. It never ceases to amaze me, the talent these engineering students display in these icy works of art. To view a slideshow of all 44 photos Daryl took today, click on this link: Winter Carnival 2009.
If you'd like to check out this year's engineering talents in person, there are a number of ways to do so. You could do a drive-by in your car, take a stroll through campus on foot or hop on a horse drawn sleigh for a guided tour, like the second to the last shot, photographed by Olivia Bartlett.
This evenings events include the Torch Light Parade down the slopes of Mont Ripley and the Fireworks display (also taken by Olivia). So if you're in town, be sure to attend.

Wish I could be there this week to enjoy the craftsmanship and artwork of Da Tech's Ice Sculptures, and the fun of Winter Carnival.
My Goodness, I would feel devastated if my ice sulpture broke on assembly. I am amazed at the ice chain and the ice tube-tunnel. Thanks for bringing me to the Carnival while I am stuck here in Florida with only 'frost on the strawberries.'

"Good Morning", The winter carnival is something everyone must see at least once. The wife and I plan on being in the C.C. late July thru early August. She would like to know about fishing charters. Any information would be welcome.

For thos interested, there's a new web site. It is a camera located 22 miles off the coast of Monterey,Calif 3000 ft below the surface. It's a "Live streaming video" developed by the Ocean Research and Conservation Assn located here in Ft Pierce, Fla. Go to www.teamorca.org/eyeinthesea.htm We not only have Neil's "eye in the sky" there's also one in the sea.

Unless your horses are more homely than in Illinois, I'd say those are mules pulling the wagon.
Mary says: Good spotting, Sarah! I guess I didn't look close enough at the photo and "assumed" it was a horse drawn sleigh like my neighbor has. I really do know the difference between a horse and a mule....really!! :->
By YooperGal (Daryl) on Saturday, February 7, 2009 - 08:26 am:
Yes, they are mules not horses. We went on the ride too.

Fortunately, the ice sculptures are not here in Troy, MI where it may reach fifty degrees today. Yes, I would like to say that again "FIFTY DEGREES!"

Hey Teresa, our daughter and son in law are at Zephyerhills. At 5:30 this morning it was 41° at Plant City and 45° here in Mid-Michigan! What's up with that??

It is pretty warm here this morning too.(Gaylord) After a couple weeks of subzero temps it feels pretty good. The ice sculptures are pretty amazing! Good day to all.

Thank you for posting these great photos of Winter Carny. It brought back fond memories: Wed night's All Niter with families touring the final touches, hot cocoa in hand, music and bright lights flooding campus; touring the judged statues on Thurs with Little Brothers; snow shoeing, x-country skiing, cafeteria tray sleds, human dawg sled races; exciting hockey games and the Macinnes Cup; winter fireworks reflected brightly off the snow. Yes...everyone must experience Winter Canival once in their lives.

Hi Paul, I was in Zephyrhills Thursday when the temp was a balmy 29º. lol It's incredible that temps have been colder this winter, here, than I can ever remember since I moved to Florida from Michigan in 1997. Right now the strawberries are cheap since they had to be picked, to sell the crop B4 this last weeks chill was on. The oranges are not ready so they will be high priced due to the water use to keep them freezing. Lots of people have lost the use of their shallow wells due to the depletion of the acquifer. Since we are still under drought conditions from last year.

DJ-Yooperdj - you captured the feelings of Winter Carnival. What a magic place no matter what time of year. Miss it dearly.
